With recession coming I'm really worried about layoff/PIPing. Are there elements are that are negotiable? For example if offered 2mth severance, can I negotiate for 1mth severance and officially stay on for 3mth with no pay during this time? Reason is that it's easier to look for another job when you are still employed....
How are we so sure of an impending recession?
Because we have been in a bull market for way too long. And so it feels like a market correction is just around the corner.
But that doesn’t necessarily imply a recession.
Why would you do that. You can always say “I’m still employed”, you need money more than “employement”
Ok let's say the give you 3 mths severance but must leave today. Do you send out your resume still saying you are employed by your employer? Isn't that lying?
How would they know? I don’t have moral obligations towards corporations which fuck us all over.
I went though hireright, and for contact number of all my previous jobs I provided phone number of my good friend-just because I didn’t want to bother with finding contacts of my previous bosses. Same girl from hire right called him 5 times in a row, asked him “did John Dow worked at your company in 2007-2009?”, he said yes, indeed John Dow worked at company XX in those years/months. Hireright report came back green, like I really did worked in those companies.
Unwise for a few reasons. 1) in WA state (unique to WA and I believe 1 other state), you can collect severance AND unemployment without diluting your unemployment compensation. Most states reduce your unemployment by some rate based on the amount of severance. 2) don't give up any amount of severance and actually push for more (+ company paid benefits). You can ask for an additional sabbatical period, but don't expect it and I'd advise not sacrificing guaranteed severance money for the faint prospect of making getting a new job easier.
You're looking at the money perspective, with the TC we earn 1-2 years of living expenses in an emergency savings fund is not an issue. But prolonged unemployment is bad for career. I won't mind getting no salary in exchange for like 3-6mth of being able to legally claim I work for a FAANG and use that to launch my next job.
OP When you say prolonged unemployment is bad for career, do you speak from experience or are you speculating?
