Negotiating RIF severance

I got laid off. Is the severance negotiable, and if so, what would I used as leverage? Should I get a lawyer? I'm part of a protected class.

If you don't know the answers talk to a lawyer. I take the severance is not impressive?

At-will employment my friend. Severance is just them trying to smooth it over

Which org? Reason for lay-off if I may ask?

If you get anything it will be the standard package. If you get a lawyer involved he/she will end up with 20% of your standard package.

Member of a protected class only matters if the RIF is disproportionately affecting said class, rather than a uniform RIF.

People like you give protected class a bad name

Yes. You can do that. Contact an attorney ASAP.

If you believe your status as a member of a protected class contributed to the reason your are being let go then you should speak with an employment lawyer about your situation. However, if you believe that your status as a member of a protected class means you can use that fact, on its own, to strong-arm them into paying you more than your RIF'ed peers ... well... in bird culture this is considered a dick move.

Usually severance is calculated based on how long you were with an organization. I've never heard of it being negotiable.
