Company 1: storage company focusing on cloud. base : $180k stocks: $175k/4 years no bonus structure, no 401k.

Company 2: Cloud storage. Base : $183k stocks: $250k/4 years, 10k sign-on bonus, 10% target bonus, 401k match.

I really like the team at company 1 but the recruiter is low balling me. How should I negotiate?

5.5 years of distributed systems experience. I haven’t interviewed with FANG yet. Planning to interview with them in few weeks.

Airbnb you are kidding yourself. It’s hard to get into Airbnb because the tech stack is rudimentary and the interviewers often don’t have knowledge for complex systems. When the interviewees give complex solutions, the interviewer is still expecting leetcode cookie cutter answers and don’t actually even understand what the interviewee is talking about. So they give an rejection instead. It’s a well-known joke amongst anyone interviewing.

    • Just because it’s harder to get in doesn’t mean it’s better man. It’s also pretty hard to get into North Korea.

Do you think it’d be the same at Apple? Recruiter contacted me today to schedule an interview with them.

No. For 6 yr exp you are squarely in L4/E4 band. Standard offer would be 160k base/15%bonus/300k RSU. This would put you close to 300k but certainly not 350.

I bet Company 1 is Box. No bonus, no 401k...

Regardless, tell Company 1 about the other offer and ask them to do $200k + $250k/4 years to "match."

Then, after they agree, tell Company 2 to bump their base to $200k to match Company 1. Then pick the best company.

      ;)

That’s a good approach but I’m a little skeptical they’d do $200k someone with just 5.5 years experience. Do you think Box would do that? What would be my TC?

Is money that important? You can hardly buy a house in the bay area with offer 2. If you want $$$ go to FANG.

so Box VS Dropbox . Dropbox is IPO soon and they have more focus on technology and they will be building more features. Box is pretty much done from eng prespective. I suggest you ask Dropbox for more and then join

I wonder if your offer from Dropbox is more likely to be matched by Box if Box knows that it's from Dropbox... If these are the two companies, then I guess location is part of the consideration...

I never understand this logic... After spending weeks convincing the company that you are hardworking, dedicated and committed to the job, and then in negotiating you turn around and say, can I have more vacation? I mean, doesn't it feel contradictory?? If I want more money, then that's what I want. I can't pay my mortgage with extra vacation

No 401k match is a bit of a bummer, but still worth going with the co that feels like the better fit.
In my experience, being candid with the recruiter that you'd like to accept their offer and directly asking if they can match it usually works. If it didn't, get creative - can they give you more vacation days, etc?
