What are things to consider when planning to negotiate salary? Other than the obvious points of:
- market value for position
- location
- company size/revenue
- experience

The most important point is having another offer in hand.
That, along with all above points help in negotiation.

But you have to articulate your point about other offer in a way that does not sound unpleasant.

Regarding the unpleasantness: maybe, but I think how you did in your interview is more important.

    Say that
    * you can get more at other companies but you would rather work here
    * I want to be motivated and happy to work here and the extra money they give you will appear in your extra productivity
    * you can "suck it up" with lower pay for a while but you will get burned out and leave at exactly the time that leaving is most costly to them

Companies hate turnover, it costs them a lot and I mean a lot of money

I don't understand? I'm talking front experience and from reading books on negotiating.

Most important thing is to pick one number and not blink. All or none.

Or take so long in the process they lose track of your initial number (happened for me)

Personally, I made the list of benefits I had from my previous employer and compared everything in one list. That gave me extra bump. Good luck.

Fundamentally, you need to negotiate from a point where you have nothing to lose --- so you need to have other offers or a stable current job or exceptional interview performance or unique skills ....identify your strength and talk accordingly
