Negotiation Success

Feeling elated and sharing a nice short success story :)

~months ago got L62 offer: 130k base, 40k sign on, 75k rsu. Felt it was low, declined. Handled negotiation really poorly. No competing offer.

6 month later: L61, 135k base, 40k sign on, 150k stock. Negotiated with competing offer. Initial offer was 130 base and 75k rsu. L61 is nice compared to 62, for an easier first promotion to look forward to.

Sort of sucks that competing offers are rather required, but it is what is I guess!

I pretty much just handled the process second time around with typical advice found here on blind. Don’t give first number unless it makes strategic sense (in my case they gave first number), make sure to secure a competing offer, let competing company know you already have an offer out, then use competing price to negotiate. Very straightforward.

I probably could have negotiated a little further back and forth, but I already hit my threshold and don’t want to risk any further.

I have 3yoe. Moving from amzn to msft!

Congrats. If you decline, how soon can you interview again?

Microsoft mostly interviews on a team by team basis. So immediately again if the hiring manager is interested. My two offers were different teams in different orgs.

Hey congrats on the new offer. I'm planning to negotiate an offer with Microsoft too. I wanted to ask for a level change. Do you think I can ask for higher stocks too?

Level is mostly dictated by your interview performance. If I were you I’d just focus on the compensation and let the team choose level

Congratulations things worked out for you.

As both of the positions are of level L61 and L62, guessing you interviewed again at MSFT. Also, were both interview from same team, or just general SWE role

I’m awaiting an offer which should included bonus and stock from a SV company, would you say using your existing company for leverage is also good? So I can set a benchmark based on many factors and without giving it away say that my current company offers more overal?

Existing is only good if you make it really clear you’re a passive candidate and they need to convince you to move. If you’re actively looking for new role aggressively then they might not take previous TC seriously

Makes sense, though I’m in a place right now where I’d personally prefer lower expectations and want to chill
