Netflix Sr Dev @ $400k? Bullshit?

A senior software engineer at Netflix tried to tell me he makes $400k cash per year. He also said “there is no stock or bonus”...it’s all cash.
Is this remotely true? If you know the real rough bands and structure, would be curious to know. Thinking of interviewing myself. Regardless, this sounds like a crock of shit.

I can’t attest to what any individual makes, and we don’t have “bands” as we pay top of market for an individual.

Salaries are all cash but there is also an additional 5% of your salary provided as options, Allocated monthly and fully vested immediately. You are also able to buy up to 100% of your salary on options at a reduced rate.

There are no bonuses as you are competitively paid and this is unnecessary.

You can buy up to 100% options? That sounds crazy AF. I wonder if there are people who really do that.

How much can an engineering hope to make at Netflix. How are raises given and how often?

True. Netflix only hires senior levels as well. They are well known to be one of the highest paying even out of FANG. Blind or Level.fyi have many data points.

My impression is that a typical engineer at N is a kind of E5.5 for FB. So very much like 350-500K compensation level.

One thing to add, Netflix has only one level for SWEs – Senior Software Engineer.

Not necessarily. It means, based on you as an individual your salary is calibrated against what your work and contributions are personally are worth. People holding the same title (ie: Senior Software Engineer) will have varying salaries. Some may even earn more than the manager as they may have a very unique skill that can’t be found in anyone else.

I see, so it's more individually focused. That leaves room for high raises. While I have you -- I have a phone interview with a system design team on Friday, any tips?

Study the culture deck and understand how you have worked in the past to manifest it. Ie: how did you demonstrate judgement? You won’t be asked that specific question but how you answer your questions will be looked at through the lens of the culture.

Nope. Each hiring manager has their own goals and approach. Ask a lot of questions to gain context and understanding and own up to what you don’t know.

That’s true and seems like an avg salary there. I entered on Netflix last year for 400k got a raise to 490k this year. But keep in mind that you see people getting fired all the time when they aren’t as good as the company thought they were. 1-2 months and you are out of bsing.

How far have you seen people go in terms of total compensation. How many yoe did you have when you joined? How many do you need to be considered for role as an swe?

As Im not in the company for so long I didn’t have much contact, but as far as I know it can range from 320-700 . And for devs usually 10 yoe + for most positions.

400k is pretty average at NFLX. Have heard of offers like 600k (ex-Facebook L6)

400k is probably only slightly above average. 500k is about top 25%. 600k is rare but there are some.
