Netflix future

I am trying to understand why Netflix is considered to be prestigious. They are yet another media streaming company. (first movers: yes). Most of their content is crap. CDN or media streaming is not particularly new technology. They might run analytics on viewership pattern etc, sure. But other than that, what value do they add ? With Disney in the picture, high costs of producing content and need to burn cash to maintain their membership, what does the future of Netflix look like ? Looking forward to be educated.

Prestige is a PR // marketing thing. It's not based on anything technical. It's a state of mind that was pushed to you. Same thing with Airbnb, Uber, Google. Set yourself free from the expectation from society and you will realize it's all a rat race and prestige is another bullshit made up by internal marketers

Very true.

I wouldn't invest in them but would love to work there

so you’d rather invest time and energy instead of money? 🤔

Microsoft Dunph May 30, 2019

They pay 95% cash 5% options. I don't think their company will do well but the cash they pay is amazing

They got you hooked. You can ask the same about Spotify. What is unknown is the impact of competitors on Netflix. Similar to TV networks, will they be part of your bundle or replaced out for another?

I think the word prestige needs to be defined. No company in itself is the best since it’s all relative. Best at what? Best at building X? Best at filming X? Best at paying employees? Best at firing people? Is Ford better than GM? Best to free yourself from the notion of being “prestigious”. It’s too... emotional. At the end of the day, competition keeps everyone in check. All we can hope is for a better product, regardless where is came from.

Isn't facebook just a social network? Why it's considered to be prestigious? Isn't google another search engine company (first mover: yes)? Isn't Tesla another EV company?

Cruise Automation bkyle May 30, 2019

And ? Are any of those prestigious?

Quora GLvH62 May 30, 2019

I don't care. My point is these companies are not more special than Netflix

Disney not paying equity to their engineers, old farts still rule the business, it’s going to be a long and tough road for them, so I think Netflix has some runway.

Fair enough. Netflix is attracting smart folks, no doubt. But considering Disney has content and it seems Netflix is struggling to develop new and good content consistently, it would be interesting to see how this plays out.

Netflix has 149m users. Disney 0. Netflix is spending 10B this year on content, Disney 1B. Netflix is profitable, Disney+ will lose money for 5 years. Netflix doesn't just have tech advantage. It has much better content slate, and the gap is increasing everyday.

True Netflix has subscribers. Don’t agree on the content part. Disney has marvel, nbc and pixel. Netflix will lose access to these. So Netflix has to invest in those without any TV/Theatrical revenue stream.

Disney has some mega IPs. I am not denying that. But content don't grow from trees. It's still an expensive endeavor to shoot a movie. Without subs, Disney can't justify spending 10B like Netflix is doing. People stick to Netflix due to fresh originals every week. Disney doesn't have enough to keep people around. Not unlike HBO.

That was educative. Would appreciate if you share links to articles/posts that validate your points regarding Hollywood and data driven approach. From a laymen perspective, it appears NTFLX needs to spend a lot of money just to retain existing customer base without theatrical revenue stream.

"content is crap"? Netflix makes good contents.
