Netflix offer: 6yr workex, good number?

Netflix may potentially be extending me an offer. What's a good number to expect? Been at FB for 5+ years, around 6.5yr total experience. Interviews went reasonably well, although I think I didn't do too well in one of the VP rounds.

Does Netflix usually negotiate? Consider beating competing offers? What's a good TC to ask for (seeing how there are almost no benefits)?

Edit: For people asking my current comp: I am hoping that doesn't come up during the negotiation per the new law that went into effect. That said, it's kinda meh (~200k), which is part of the reason why I'm looking to switch.

Edit2: for everyone following along: I did end up getting an offer. It is in the 400k ballpark (don't want to give exact numbers for confidentiality). Didn't try negotiating.

I don't understand this meme that we have no benefits. We don't have a gym or free massages. Or tuition reimbursement. Otherwise, we have everything everyone else does - subsidized health care, 401k, donation matching, ride share subsidies, free food, generous time off, etc.

The best employee only PPO plan costs less than 10k. So you get the best plus 5k cash. Family plan can cost 3 times as much. That's why someone quoted 15k out of pocket.

BTW, while we don't have tuition reimbursement. You can join any training workshop or conference and get reimbursed. The philosophy is freedom and responsibility. You make your judgement if this is for the company and company is willing to pay for it.

@lukecage - does Netflix offer free food throughout the day? I heard that it offers only lunch and no bfast and dinner. Is that true? Sounds strange

Breakfast and lunch. No dinner, but there are usually leftovers you can take home.

OP probably already makes 600-700k. Netflix wont be able to match that. Stay at FB or move to Google. NFLX is a company that can move you from a 250-300k job to a 400k-450k jump. Don’t think they pay senior engineers over 600k. Best of luck.

The unvested RSU is not for the next 4 years right since Google vests monthly too after an year, no? Regarding the second I certainly agree, the options plan of 40 percent discount is certainly more reward.

Refresher is typically for next 4 years, just like when you join. So it can be sizable from 4th year onward. That's how FG keep talents.

Any refresher grant that you get vests over 4 years, just like your initial grant. But it's not sizable in my experience, definitely nowhere near the initial grant. Unless you're a really high performer, but usually not even then.

700k/yr does sound a bit insane to wrap my head around :-)

Due to a few bad choices, I'm at E4. Also part of the reason why I'm looking to change. Having vested my initial grant, I make nowhere close to the numbers you have calculated. Thanks, though, for giving me an idea of how far behind I am :-\

As some googler on this thread already suggested, nflx usually pays folks top of their personal comp. so expect to reach around 400-450k and you might be able to stretch it to 500k at best if they play ball.

What was the interview like? Leetcode or design heavy? I’m thinking of interviewing there too.

    • Facebook foobar1860
      OP
Design (more accurately, tech discussion) heavy. I didn't feel like the on-site interview was difficult from a tech/coding perspective. There was a take home project and a phone interview that had one coding question, though.

Something to keep in mind is that one aspect of top-of -market is experience. There are many engineers there who have 15+ years of experience. $700k with 6 yrs seems a bit of a stretch.

It will be really helpful to point to some of the design questions , coding questions and some details on the take home . Is it a ML position or engg position ? Congrats on the offer

No. Please don’t reveal any questions. People who interview are also on blind and will easily narrow down the candidate when they see their own design question posted.

Blind so far has been very tight lipped about interview questions. Let’s keep it that way.

OP, it will be great if you share your FB numbers and Netflix numbers once you get the offer.. if no one shares their actual numbers, and talk only in relative terms then having such threads are not beneficial for the community..

^ this, it’s especially problematic for people joining from a unicorn startup with a huge AMT. Other companies are more than happy to play ball on that and offer a signon except NFLX where a recruiters naive comment was why do you even want to exercise; they are anyways 0. That’s the reason you are quitting your startup in the first place. :)

Fb for 5 years+, should be E5. Usually go for at least 20% increase. If Netflix is a higher level then should be much more.

So I’ve heard that Netflix usually moves quickly to make offers ahead of other potential employers. And they usually cause people to stop interviewing altogether because the offers are usually super good. So what’s the verdict?

I did, yes. And my (E4 to E5) clock was not supposed to reset then, but it happened to be because of some miscommunication. Since then, I've not been promoted to E5 and am now at the end of my time.
