Netherlands- Starting on contract?

A friend is interviewing for roles in Amsterdam but he’s been told that he will need to start on a one year contract before being considered for an indefinite contract. Is this this the norm in Netherlands?

Yes this is standard. After a year, he will either be offered a permanent contract if he did well, or be shown the door otherwise. Sometimes another termed contract is offered if they’re on the fence about him.

Booking.com offers permanent contracts by default in many cases, if he is going for a job there he should try and negotiate for a permanent contract.

Unless the position is for a graduate role.

Amazon will offer permanent contract

I've hired a ton of folks at Booking. IMHO, in most cases the candidate will get a permanent contract if he/she negotiates. Most hiring managers will be okay. However, a permanent contract isn't that valuable as it has been in the Netherlands due to recent changes in employment law that mainly work in favor of employers (vs employees). The process of getting a mortgage does become easier so your friend has to decide on his priorities :)

It depends on the role. Most developers I heard they received permanent contract right away. for me as an entry level analyst, I get a temporary one at first but get renewal as a permanent employee after one year
