One from Microsoft and the other from Google. TC is about the same (3% better at Google). Given the same location, please evaluate these offers. Microsoft AI L61: team builds AI related product, is in early stage, very prospective, and is growing rapidly. I will be working to build a pipeline for bringing in training data (not quite ML, though the product is) Google L3: team matching will not begin until I accept, better perks(?), free food, slightly better TC Note the level differences with almost no TC difference. Given that I have limited skillset that would set me to somewhere between level1 and level2 engineer, how would you evaluate these offers? All the things, I’m currently considering: promotion aspect (head start in Microsoft?) career growth TC growth (after job hop/promotion) - most important product area (Microsoft wins for sure) I’m thinking when I get promoted to L4 from Google, I can probably get paid better than from Microsoft, but careerwise I can reach senior level faster from Microsoft then jump to other company. What do you think? Is downleveling for TC good idea? TC: 185k for MS, 190k for Google
Both are good offers. I would also consider where you want to live and where your friends/family are. It can get lonely moving to a new city
Which is why I am very ambivalent. If one was just shitty overall, I would have made an easier choice. I’m not really location sensitive as well.
If you care about TC most, G will be better. G’s stock refresh target for L3 is ~50k, which is more than L66 in MS. You should reach L4 in 2-3 years which will get even more stock. For team/area, it’s hard to say given you did not match team with G yet. G’s LA office is not very big, maybe less choices for you I guess.
Great! Thanks for the insight! I was thinking if it would be easier to increase TC by going to MSFT and take fast promo path, then move in as a senior level. Do you have any opinion on this?
Basically, how does that compare with starting from Google, get promotion, then moving?
I know the team you would be at MS, feel free to DM
Keeping in mind state income tax, potential for promotions, and enthusiasm for product, I say Microsoft wins. Good luck!
I believe Google leverages for the same amount for LA and Seattle. I was told I can always ask to move my offer to be located in Seattle, but I decided to explore new city. So the location is not a problem. But the other aspects do make sense.
Then isn't the total take-home pay lower? You're talking 15k more in taxes/less in take-home in California. That does not even out (according to online calculators.)
How are you getting l61? Do you have a masters? Prior experience?
Also, are they both in sea? Thats a big factor
MS in Sea. Google in LA (LA by my choice). Also, I have almost 2 yrs of internship experience throughout my bachelor’s and master’s(as you guessed)
