I just moved to San Francisco Bay area from Houston I Have been an Account Executive, Technical Sale, and Account Management roles for the past 6 years. My clients were Fortune 500 companies and my average transaction was anywhere between $1.50-2.0Million and up. Trying to break into Tech Sales and wanted to see if anyone could help or had any advice? Thanks so much!

Reach out to recruiting firms and be prepared to start over financially. If you can take the hit to the wallet You can do well.

Yes I tried Betts and and The Lions. Betts was not professional at all. Never reached back after they dragged me to their office for a F2F meeting. Networking at moment and seems like that would be the only way to get a job around here! Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, it’s hit or miss, more misses than hits with recruiting firms but a good first step. You may want to try to connect with insider recruiters at some of the organizations you’re interested in. The job market is tricky here despite the low unemployment rate. Best of luck.

You are funny. My better half works for Chevron. We got an offer we could not refuse. I was here three years ago and was excited about the opportunity to learn something new and I love Technology. But was shocked that the city has become to run down. I live in SOMA it is not that bad but the streets are dirty, smelly and homelessness is crazy here. I do love the weather though! Beats the heat of Houston.

How is the new Uber CEO??? He is from my country!!! Was curious. Some people had criticized him for being soft. I did see his commercial and I liked it. The only thing I don’t like is that everyone in this city is either an Uber or Lyft driver.

Ya, car ownership isn't necessary in the city. I like the new CEO, he seems very rational

Oracle still has tech sales, going to have to start at the bottom though. 2m is a rounding error for them.

1.50-2.0 mill was just the minimum start. I had one project go to $4Mill in three months! I think Tech industry just gets freaked out by the large numbers! I saw an avg transaction of $5-50k in one job description and found it interesting so I wonder if that’s a rounding error as well!!..:):)

The bay area is extremely expensive, especially for young people like yourself. You don’t need to come here to be in the tech industry, especially if you’re in sales. Other tech hubs like Denver, Phoenix, and Austin have tech sales as well. The offer that you “could not refuse“ will get you nowhere near the kind of compensation you need to make to have a middle-class life.

You might already “be here”, but every month that you spend here means you are setting yourself years back in terms of financial freedom. Don’t be fooled by the shiny veneer of Silicon Valley. Most tech workers struggle to eke out a living. If I were you, I’d create an exit plan in 2 years. Get into a start up that’s funded by any of the name-branded VCs (Sequioa, Kleiner, Accel), work there for 2 years, get promoted, and in your 3rd year, start looking for opportunities elsewhere. That way, you can brand yourself as having “Silicon Valley experience at Kleiner-backed startup in the XYZ space”, get paid top dollar elsewhere, and afford a big house. Target 2021 to move to another tech hub.
