New York (450k) vs Seattle(300k)

I am currently in Seattle making 300k with family ( 2 kids). I have my own house. Would you suggest moving to NY? I have been offered 450 k

Yup

Sure. Which company? Yoe?

Depends. Is raising a family hard on 300k? If so, the additional 150k could make a big difference.

Remember higher taxes and living expenses

How much higher taxes and living expense? If one gain 150k extra, after taxes and cost of living, he will still save 90 k which is very good amount .. what do you say?

shouldn’t you go over this with your family?

Microsoft FEBx80 Dec 5, 2018

Main intent of this thread - does it make financially logical to move to NYC considering cost of hassle of moving and starting life again ?

Airbnb jim.hodlen Dec 5, 2018

and how are *we* supposed to evaluate that for the OP?

Hell yes

Depends if you like NY. Bankrate shows you come out slightly behind in COLA if moving to New York.

What website is that?

You need to look at where you would living and the cost of housing/rent and commute etc. It’s highly unlikely that 150k wouldn’t cover the difference for renting but if you’re looking to purchase a home then I can’t imagine that’s enough but that’s me talking outta my ass not knowing the housing market of New York. You need to share where you’re going and company for that sort of info. Is it JP Morgan?

It is Citadel ..

New York is a totally different lifestyle. Great for a young single person in their 20s. Super challenging if you have young kids. You will likely end up living in Westchester or NJ and commuting, unless you are ready for the shell shock of two kids in a small Manhattan apartment. I lived in NYC my teenage years and much of my young adult life, moved to the Bay Area when my daughter was 1. Love visiting, but would take a lot of money to get me to move back with kids.

Intuit Uz1h6d Nov 30, 2018

On 450k income OP could probably afford a closer location

Amazon Northman Nov 30, 2018

NJ or Westchester are close locations, if you want access to good public schools. Brooklyn is overpriced, shitty, and has few good places to send kids to school. Queens is awful. Riverdale is nice, but expensive (especially assuming private school for 2 kids). Raising children in NYC is vastly more expensive than people realize.

Nice thing about New York , you can live in Jersey or upstate New York and get a good house and commute via public transit.go for it. You will save more at the end I think. Agreed if you have kids, it may be a challenge for them to adjust as they lose their friends from prior school. Something to consider
