Today is 1.7.19 and the offered start date is 2.19.19. I just realized that my current company pays out bonus in 03.01.19 or 03.15.18. Should I try to negotiate the hire date to March or does the company just see me as a bad person for thinking about just getting bonus and leaving. Have others had experience with this before?
Well I guess it was worded wrong. My hire date is in Feb but the bonus payout for last year is in March. Do I negotiate to see if I can start later after the bonus payout ? Or is that just bad manners.
It is always inconvenient for your next company to change your start date regardless of the reason. I wouldn’t call it bad manner though. Email your recruiter asap to see if they can accommodate your request
Thanks
You should tell them about the bonus payout date. They might increase your sign on bonus if they need you to join soon, or let you collect bonus and join later, or if you had already accepted the date before, tell you it's too late to renegotiate. I have pushed back a start date by three months for a bonus and an rsu refresher cliff. There's nothing wrong in saying you want to collect the money you earned.
How do you just realize this? This should have been an imp consideration during negotiation or offer acceptance?
My comp package does kinda include it with a sign on bonus but the comp negotiations started in Dec’18. And it just happened to be they were okay with Feb-19-19. Didn’t think they were ever going to be close to the bonus payout date.
Yes. Wait for bonus if it's significant money to you else don't worry.
Check the details of your bonus payout. Many companies will pay annual bonuses as long as you were employed on Dec 31 of the previous year.
That seems like a usual practice in tech firm. In some financial firm if they get your resignation before the bonus day, even your last day is a couple of months after that, you will get 0 bonus.
Wow. Maybe I should look into that too.
My previous boss even told me that I should wait for the bonus because I deserved it. Bonus is usually for your past work and you usually miss out a bit of bonus on leave (for example, bonus paid on March is for your work ending on the previous December). There is no point to feel bad about that
