Which place is better to start my career in Seattle? Microsoft offers better benefits and a significantly higher compensation package for new grads. Amazon Alexa or Microsoft Azure for the teams.

EDIT: please elaborate your poll choice with a comment below as to why.

Azure is a pretty sweet deal on my side. Amazon, it largely depends on who you end up with. That said, I've heard more negative than positive from their camp.

Take the higher compensation at MSFT. Build up a little war chest of funds, use those funds as initial seed money down the line for your own company or to pad your income if you choose to take a lower salary/higher equity job in the future.

Money isn't everything, but the flexibility you can have later from that compensation difference can pay major dividends.

You can repay me by fixing Azure Portal.

401k matching, no insurance premium, more vacation and espp will add up for the difference as well. BTW, Azure portal cannot be fixed though OP can slow it down from getting worse. It is a complete mess no one knows how to improve it.

Microsoft first and then Amazon as sde2. The first few years at Amazon will be brutal and not worth the hassle. I'm speaking as someone who worked there before.

Are you saying you interned at AMZN? If you like me your team, I would recommend AMZN then. That's a big part of the process. There are plenty of shitty teams at msft as well and you never know which one you'll get. So go AMZN!

When I was interviewing the comp diff was like 30k it's gotten much worse and that doesn't include benefits and Amazon treats new grads as fungible (why they don't negotiate)

Lol. This is the most common stupidest thing I hear from a lot of people. Focus on learning and do what with it? Until that thing you are learning is giving you an advantage in some way, focus on learning is bullshit. Most people I see do nothing with what they learn. What did you do with your learnings?

Microsoft for corporate "sit on your ass" mentality. Amazon for "work your ass off and forget about the work/life balance" mentality. Neither is perfect, but you'll learn the value of yourself more at Amazon, in my opinion.

Just switched to Amazon from Microsoft. I know everyone's experience varies based on their team. I had shitty managers at Microsoft but some friends were on great teams and loved it there.

As for compensation, I'm making substantially more at Amazon. Although Microsoft has a better work like balance.

New grad comp offer is hard higher at msft. This is different once you hit sde3/senior

I've worked at both for around 3.5 years each. If you want to learn quickly and potentially work on cool problems with smart people, I would highly recommend Amazon. This may come at the expense of your personal life. Expect to put in long hours with little reward or appreciation. Microsoft has better benefits and generally better cost of living raises. It's also much easier to be successful at Microsoft. This comes with the downside of often dealing with stupid decisions, boring work and dealing with some lazy people. Keep in mind that azure will ALWAYS be chasing AWS unsuccessfully.

Don't chase the comp. Go with what product you're more interested in and what team you connected better with. When you work at a place where all you can think about is leaving at 5, comp doesn't matter anymore.

Microsoft is lax in many ways when it comes to what they expect of you. It's the work/life balance tactic. Much of the work you do may be uninteresting (can't speak for Azure) but you're generally free to come and go as you please provided you're delivering on your commitments. Some people see this as a golden goose because they can comfortably do things they want to do. Amazon, from what I'm told, expects a higher degree of commitment and most employees are not only maintaining old code. Amazon is in new businesses all of the time, so people are expected to make those businesses successful no matter what. This means you generally face more scrutiny but the work you do is business critical and thus more technically satisfying. Personally I'd rather have the latter, though I'm currently doing the former.

In Microsoft, at least once a month they restart your PC automatically while you are sleeping at home, terminating all your workspaces, loaded projects in various VS windows which makes you hysterical.

Amazon has lowered the bar for new grad considerably so it wont worth shit on you resume. Industry hires who go through the 5 onsite might be different tho. That said, i feel like unless you join Azure, its not really worth joining Msft
