New grad offer comparison

Yelp / Eng incorrect
Oct 1, 2018 30 Comments

I have a few new grad SWE offers so far:

Google: 120k base, 100k/4yr RSU, 20k signing
Bloomberg: 142k base, 18k target bonus, 10k signing
Yelp: 110k base, 120k/4yr RSU, 10k signing

My product area at Google would be Google Product Infrastructure (not sure if this means anything). At Yelp I’d probably be on Core ML (the ML platform team). I don’t know anything about Bloomberg team.

I interned at Yelp this summer and really liked it, and I think I would enjoy working there. Google seems like it would be a better name, but I’m worried the work wouldn’t be interesting.

Any advice/comments, in particular from the standpoint of career growth/learning/interesting work?

My best friend is a lifer at Bloomberg and loves it, but he's also a workaholic. He has nearly no life outside of work. My advice would be G but I never worked there. Don't go to yelp

      I thought Bloomberg would've been a standard 40h a week job

Bloomberg is very dependent on team for wlb... Some work 35 hours a week and some go over 45 easily

Bloomberg WLB is totally up to you as an SWE there. When I joined, people on my team were in the office 35-45 hours per week, with my boss working 40. Bloomberg very rarely terminates SWE employees, so the pressure is relatively low. By contrast, Yelp is known to be a pressure cooker.

Was Yelp completely non negotiable? I know they said you couldn't but did you try to bring it up with the Google offer?

I interned at yelp too but still in the process for other offers.

    • Pretty sure Yelp will move up for a Google offer, as they/TripAdvisor are the only competition in their space.

CoreML is a pretty high profile team at Yelp! They're doing some great work and you'll probably be able to have a lot of impact. Your offer is pretty typical for a new grad offer, I suspect there is not much more they will offer unless you somehow pick up a Master's or a PhD.

As a new grad, you’d be much better off in the long term with Google in your pocket. It opens up a lot more options later in life.

Where's the poll? I was gonna say Google, but with that detail in mind, I think you are better off at Yelp

Don't you also get 15% bonus at Google? Meaning it gives you the highest TC of the 3?

Obviously I’m biased because I work for Yelp but the team you’ll start in is top notch and Yelps work life balance is much better than the other companies

I'm aware. I could also probably do an ML team, but I think I'd probably learn more on the infra side

Lots of negotiation room with Google, your stocks can go up to $200k, and at least $50k signing too.

For Bloomberg, new grad pay is amazing, WLB is great too. But pay won't keep up.

Pay won’t keep up for “meets expectations”. If you’re in the top 10%, you’ll have nothing to worry about.

I'd go for Google/Yelp just to be in the epicenter of tech. Just out of curiosity, what kind of lifestyle does this salary afford in SF? Is a personal studio/1BR with daily takeout/delivery/eating out affordable?
