Next move after accepting a lowball offer from Google?

I didn’t have leverage when negotiating with Google. I accepted an l3 offer with 175 TC, 3 yoe. I desperately needed to leave Amazon, so I’m happy to have the lifeline and ofc I’m excited that it’s Google, but also after spending a few months on this app I’m finding it hard to be really thrilled.

I structured my interviews so that Google was last, and I failed at a handful of top places beforehand. I have a few interviews remaining but I’ve already signed the offer so I’m sure I can’t negotiate. I’m going to be joining a cool team in LA. I just can’t shake the lousy feeling that I left like 70k on the table by not prepping hard enough

I feel that my options are somewhat limited. Even at this “lowball” offer, the only places in town that might be able to compete are snap, tinder, and Facebook. Is my only recourse to stay for a year, leave to one of those places for two years, reinterview and return with competing offers? Promo would take 2 years, right?

Im just trying to plot out the next chapter of my career and trying to optimize.

      175k in LA plus whatever sign on bonus is good for L3. Face it you couldn't get any other offers, and you didn't get L4 at G, so buckle down and work hard first

    LA is different. Most of the salary mentioned in blind is for Bay Area. You have a good salary for LA 3 yoe.

      Expensive doesn't mean high TC. TC is determined by demand for talent not cost of living

    Frankly, optimizing for short term TC is just like trying to time the market as an investor: in the long run, you won’t win, and in fact you often lose badly. There’s almost always a price you pay with those offers: less desirable role/team/location, bad WLB, etc. Imagine burning months of your life grinding Leetcode (instead of enjoying your life outside of work) for the “prize” of getting over-leveled into a job you have to work insanely hard to keep. Imagine burning out, or joining a company with sketchy financials and getting laid off right into the maw of the next recession.

    Optimize for what you want to do long term (skills, team, growth, other intangibles, etc), not how much money you can make this year or next. I have friends who took SDET or PM offers from Microsoft out of school while I took a pure SWE role in the domain I wanted for a third less money. That was 7 years ago—care to guess where we all are today? I make nearly twice as much as any of them, and have far more opportunities in general.

    Here’s the simple reality: you’ll be joining one of the most respected and desirable companies in the world (one that prints money on top of that), in the city you want to live in, and are joining a team you’re excited to work with. Ok, so you didn’t get L4—but this also means that short term expectations will be significantly lower, so you can relax as you ramp up. You have so much to look forward to, and it’ll all work out in the end.

      Thanks a lot! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this—it was the post that kinda broke through, helping me internalize how great this opportunity this is. It’s hard not to be immediately on the lookout for the next opportunity and salary bump, but deep down I actually am excited and would hate to leave in a year out of some kind of misguided machiavellian impulse

    I’d say you have a fairly straightforward, minimal risk path of making 175k-300k-300k TC over the next 3 years, by simply getting an L4 job in 1 year at various possible places.

    Yes it must hurt to have not gotten L4 this time but I don’t think the complicated scenarios you are describing meaningfully improve your long term return. They seem to just add headaches and stress.

      Thanks for the perspective :) I think I’d be less frantic about if my family weren’t all in LA. I’m not as keen on leaving to the bay area and there are only 3 or 4 companies that I think would give me a comparable TC, so I was really hoping to get something I could be happy with for a number of years

      I’m in the exact same boat. Entire family in LA, I really tried to find something there.

      Bit the bullet and took L4 at FB in SF, 330k TC. Oh well, we’ll see if I’m able to make my way back.

      I hear FB might be increasing their presences in LA. That’s my hope.

      the COL doesn’t seem *that* much higher in the bay area (not SF) than LA. Is that your experience?

      I really don’t understand why all top companies wouldn’t open an office down here. It’s the same time zone, pretty short flight done here

      Can’t answer on COL, haven’t moved yet. But expecting around 20-40% more expensive in total. But I lived in an expensive area of LA, I imagine if you wanted to, you could live in LA for less than half the price of SF.

      And agreed, I think companies would really benefit by expanding to LA and taking advantage of the talent there. The talent market seems totally flipped as if there’s excess talent with limited jobs, it’s absurd how much better offers and leverage I had in SF.

    Blind has made a big difference in that it shows you the power of competing offers. It's easy to feel inferior and underpaid but take this as a learning experience and in your next jump, you will be more thorough with scheduling.

    If you look around, you will find a couple posts that tell you what they did to have the offers come in at the same time

  • Unless you’re a rockstar, it will take at minimum 3 cycles for promo to L4. L3 range is typically 170-225, so you didn’t actually leave 70k on the table. 3 YOE is border of L3-L4, so it might have been your interview performance

    Find work your interested in, grind for promo or if all else fails, leave and go back

      Thanks! I’m guessing a cycle is a year? I guess if that’s the range for bay area, I did very middle of band. 175 in LA is roughly 200k in Mountain View, assuming that’s their rationale

      I was given the choice and wussed out of L4 interviews. Google is my top choice, and I figured Id have some other offer in hand to get a solid l3 offer. I struggled with system design and “tell me about a time you did X” interviews at LinkedIn and Uber, and rather than down leveling me they just rejected. I wanted to avoid that here so just went for l3. Plus I only have 5 years total studying programming and thought google l4 expectations could easily be too intense.

      Anyway, I have all these google guys here, I should be asking for tips to ensure my success! Any pointers?

    OP, you know you’ve been negatively influenced by excessively focusing on TC. It’s not a bad offer. You should focus on doing a good job and try to get promoted. Don’t even think about looking for another job in a year, because that will distract you. If you do a great job, you will grow a lot professionally, TC will come, or you can look for another job. Be happy with what you get, be it TC or other things in life

      No sarcasm. Cos I know the feeling. If this is Seattle then it’s aight. But in bay it’s a bit low. As a reference. I am lvl3 and base is 145k.

    Tough situation.

    One strategy may be to hurry and try to get one more offer. Then go back to Google and let them know that you're on the fence.

    Otherwise, try interviewing again next year.
