Non-tech, mid level professional - Cisco vs Tesla

Hi,

I have an offer from both Cisco and Tesla for a non-tech role (think program manager). Both roles are in the Bay, and Cisco's offer is 20k higher (was really surprised!). Cisco - collaboration, Tesla - Energy.

How do the folks here compare Cisco vs Tesla - culture, personal work satisfaction, growth and future mobility? My plan is to get 1-2 years of experience in this next gig, then return to one of the FANG / Uber/ Airbnb / Salesforce companies.

Current TC - 200k, 5 yoe @ Amazon

      I don’t understand what you’re saying. You can’t accrue 280 hours in a year?

It’s not a different culture, embedder - it’s the same as every company — you find pockets of groups that move fast and do great work and there’s always legacy work that is slower paced.

For example, some of the people you have are just grabbing images from your fleet and labeling for your neural net are not moving fast or doing anything groundbreaking, but it’s work that has to be done to move the company forward

To the other Cisco peeps — you get 4 weeks no matter what every year and can bank up to 240 hours. I was just giving a rounded answer earlier, stop nitpicking.

RTP, we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. I’ve had enough exposure to large old organizations to know this. Intel is another example - good company, but with a very different culture.

And FWIW, labeling is done by interns as a side project.

Understood - I probably don’t have as much exposure as you do. Cheers

Amazon -> Cisco will definitely look like a downgrade on your resume

Not true. Program management at Cisco is 100% about execution. No input at all on the product definition.

Yeah thanks for the q and a session. I would pass this question

When you say it is all about execution, can you elaborate it further? What do they do

I don't want to retire.. I want to do good work with reasonable wlb (40-50 hour weeks), and good pay..

Then go to Cisco. You’ll shine if you’re good and have great WLB. People that are bad or don’t work hard get laid off — just like any other company.

I don’t understand why would people do FAANG -> Cisco... 🤭

unless you are from one of those special group where ex-Googler came over and brought many of Xgooglers to start their own team with specific goals/positions within the company

Cuz it doesn’t matter once you have Google on your resume where you’ll go next. I don’t think it’s a downgrade at all

Energy team has more relaxed work life balance but it also depends on your manager. People swaps between companies and FANGs always need people, so I don't think you will have trouble getting an "interview call" if you join Cisco. but yes you might not be spammed by all the startups if you do so. Brand matters to fresher's when they don't have any referrals and not much experience either, in your case you should be fine IMO

Program managers are basically tapeworms or hagfish depending on the circumstances. You should consider one of The really bloated and dying whale fall companies like SAP or Oracle to be your host for awhile.

I would ask tesla to match, but otherwise it is a no brainer to me ;)

If you look to switch in 1-2 years then what you’ll do is way more important than a company’s brand

A delivery manager left Cisco for Tesla. Not sure what he was doing at Cisco or how much that helps but that’s that.
