Does it exist? Or we all just subject to game of thrones politics. Honestly, it gets me riled up to the point where I’d like to take each person on my team, plot / analyze the relative value of what they did (scrum points, hours to complete, new revenue brought in, etc), and see if they got their comp via bullshit or actually earned it.
Top 10% and bottom 10% is often self evident. Middle 80% is subjective and in eye of beholder... this is where having a good manager/advocate helps
What is evident about it though? That’s, I think, what the OP was asking.
Bottom 10% are not getting along with skip manager and seems to be on projects that get cut. Top 10% works unlimited hours, good at showcasing work and socially smooth...and is clearly the go to person when shit hits the fan.... otherwise the sleeping with boss or super dumb manager fits in the small niche. A socially awkward person will only break the 80% with a great managers help

I don't think so unless you're legitimately at the top of your game. For instance, it's obvious that certain people are at the top, Jeff Dean and the like. For the rest of us sitting on the upper half but not in the tail of that bell curve it gets much harder. So it becomes more about convincing people that you're further to the right than the guy next to you. The real.problem is that most people have an inflated sense of self quality than the truth. So when you see .someone do a little better than you, you feel bad even though it was just a crap shoot to begin with.
