1.5 years experience at Amazon.

Indeed (Austin): Senior software engineer
115k base
13% (15k) avg yearly performance bonus
10k anniversary bonus after 1st and 2nd year
10k sign on
25k/3yr stock

Microsoft (Bellevue): SDE II (L61)
132k base
60k/4yr RSU
10% (13k) average performance bonus
20k sign on

Worth noting that MSFT has much better 401k matching.

It'd be nice to stay in Austin but I'm a little worried about salary/career growth.

How am I doing Blind?

Moved from Amazon to indeed a few months ago. Couple of things to remember about indeed:
    1. Performance bonus is 10% at meets rating (most common). The recruiter tell you this fake number of 13%.
    2. They don't have stock. They give you LTIP that payout in cash after about 3 years. No guaranteed value on it. If company grows revenue and profit at 50% yoy for 3 years, you might get $2.35 per ltip.
    3. No guaranteed yearly hikes or salary adjustments

      OP
That's good to know regarding the performance bonus. I was told 10% was the bottom - is this true? (Could also be most common of course).
The LTIP strategy where it pays out after 3 years is kind of weird. We know that Amazon's RSU backloading is BS but all-or-nothing payout seems worse.
Do you think a decent performer should *expect* to get a yearly raise?

  • Microsoft has a way better technical brand than Indeed.

I don’t buy the COL argument at all, post tax income in Seattle - extra rent is very much above 0. Also, every Big 4 pays almost the same to satellite offices, get in and transfer. Team selection slash impact will be more limited but it’s optimal move if you really care about location/COL.

I wonder about that too. I ran some numbers and it looks like housing is far and away the biggest CoL difference for a relatively frugal person. If so then it's a fairly flat ~12k difference or so.

I’d consider the upside more than the starting comp. It’ll likely be much higher at MS.

Good compensation in Austin. Your $$$ go way longer here than in Seattle.

I believe 50% up to $9000 match, but this was when the IRS limit was $18000 (it's now $18500) so it might be $9250 match now.

Is 18k total match by both employer and the employee or is it just by the employer?

18k (18500 this year) is the IRS limit for just the employee (applies to everyone I think). If MSFT matches 50%, that gets you ~27k into your 401k each year.

It pays about the same on average for Amazon SDE I. I'm at the bottom of the band (~119k) so either would be a raise for me.

I wish. The few dev teams that each have here must think they've won the lottery.
