Offer deadline conundrum

I'm a fresh CS PhD graduate from top 10 university applying for data scientist jobs. Got an offer from Microsoft $195k TC a month ago, but it's been hard to contact data scientists on the team I placed to because of holidays and not sure what people work on (afraid the team is too engineering heavy). I have a deadline on 12/31 and Ive been trying to extend it but recruiters gone on vacation until after new years. Should I just wait it out or will my offer be withdrawn waiting for a response? My concern is locking into a job that may not be a good fit for me. Thanks!

You may always have buyer’s remorse. Ask yourself if you liked the interview process. Do you anything about the team you’ve been offered the position with? Is it good? Does it align with what you want to do? Why trying to extend yet if you got the offer a month back?

If your job is in the US, then it is at will employment. The paperwork might feel daunting while joining/changing jobs, but otherwise, you can check them out for a few months, and then decide.

Your a grad, no experience, and you were offered $195k? I imagine that is an outstanding offer and you won’t see that again soon. Do you want to work at MS? Take that offer. Those student loans are probably equal to or more than that offer. What are you waiting on, mate?

I worked for a couple of years before PhD and have no loans. Great parents and good grants

Count your blessings, as many great parents could not afford an education that’s $250k. While that generosity was extended to you from your parents, you’ll need to do your work now. Do you have those two years of experience at a FANG company? If not, I say take this offer, build your resume and your career can take off. Best to you, mate. You are already in a great position.

You should be able to send an email to the recruiter requesting an extension because you want to speak with another data scientist in the team before making a decision. You can say that due to the holidays it has been difficult to navigate people's schedules but are excited to speak with a team member and come to a decision. Just be sure to convey your excitement around the position and role, and that you just want to be sure of a team fit.

I did do exactly that but no response due to holidays and the deadline coming up. The conundrum is should I accept and speak with data scientists in the new year. Then if the fit isn't there, reneg on the acceptance.

Not sure what your PhD was in within CS, but even though $195k TC is a decent offer it's certainly possible to get more than that.
