YOE : 8 years
Current TC : 180k
Location: Seattle.

Not going to share team details to maintain anonymity
==================================
Amazon offer
Org : AWS
Level L5
Base : 145K
1st year bonus 100k + 2nd year bonus 75k
Stocks 125 over 4 years. Vesting 5% 1st year, 15% 2nd year, 40% 3rd, 40% 4th.

TC : ~255k
=====================================
Microsoft offer
Org : Not Azure. :)
Level 63
Base: 180k
Sign on : 35k cash over 2 years.
Sign on stock : 260k over 4 years.

TC : 260k based on above number.
MS said they have additional cash bonus that goes as high as 30% but I am assuming realistically it would be around 10-12%. They also have annual stock grant which can go as high as 40k, not sure what should be realistic assumption on this.

So MS is saying TC should be 280k.

=============================

Questions:
- How realistic is the assumption from MS recruiter that my TC would 280 after considering annual cash bonus and stock bonus.
- If above is true, will amazon match MS offer? If yes, I am inclined towards Amazon more as I liked team and work I would do in that team. If yes, Amazon will mostly add more cash bonus or stock?
- Which company is better to join if I want to move up the ladder faster.

Microsoft you'll work 35-45 hours a week depending on how much you like working.

    Amazon you'll work 70-80 hours a week.

MS vest is 25% per year. Amzn vest is shite.

I think its a pretty easy choice lol.

I'd personally choose the one with better work, it's not like 20k TC is gonna drastically change your style of living but idk

Better Work is not equal to better work lofr balance. If better work leads to shitty, Wlb then in my opinion it's not worth it. There should be a balance.

Thats a really good offer for 63. And a good 63 can even get through an L6 loop at Amazon. I would suggest taking up the MSFT offer, they treat their employees much better and you can always switch teams in the future.

I agree ☝️ man 👨!! Having worked at both places - Toxic culture in Amazon is not worth all the $ in the world. You don’t even want to know the backstabbing managers once they have to meet URA targets.

if you want to retire join microsoft but if you want to learn then Amazon..your next job depends on your resume not on how you manage to work 30-40hours vs 40+..also based on market share, i would always join the market leader to be on innovative side than competitive parity side!

Starting at L5 sucks. Why not work at Microsoft for 1 year and get Amazon L6 offer which should get you 350-380 tc? Also ask the team in Microsoft if there’s any opportunity to work on a large scale service. I know there are several services owned by VS team but they are obviously not at the same scale as EC2.

OP. You are clearly driven by opportunity to learn - good for you! You believe you will learn more at Amazon, at least at face value, even if the money and level is lower than MS. You won’t know unless you try.l I guess. You can again interview with Microsoft in a year or two if things don’t work out.

      Why joining L5 sucks?

Cause when you join you will realize that kids with 2 yoe are also L5. Granted it is a wide band but the leveling is a low ball.

Microsoft L63 is senior whereas Amazon L5 is SDE2. Microsoft’s benefits and WLB are a lot better. I’m no longer at Microsoft but in my mind it’s not even a question. Go with Microsoft.

With this YOE you should get L6 in Amazon. You got down leveled. However that’s a pretty good L5 offer.
But I really hate how Amazon give refreshers so I like Microsoft more.

As I mentioned before, yes I interviewed for L6 but they felt it is better to come in as L5 and then get considered for L6 and I thought that is reasonable.

From my experience. L5 to L6 promo is not easy even you’re external hire with “promised” fast track promotion. 2 years will be fast but 3 to 4 yrs is more reasonable timeline - if Amazon did not wear you out by the time.

That amazon L5 you could argue is a little low for 8 yoe. 63 for MS seems doable. The comparisons aren’t always 1:1

Microsoft, easy. And 15% is the target bonus (Median? Average?), so 20k bonus a year is reasonable.
    Jul 16 7
    • Microsoft P Zezima
Yes, cash bonus ranges from 0-30% and stock bonus ranges from 0-something in the 35k ballpark (don't recall the exact number).

The stock vests over 5 years.
      Jul 16
    • Samsung amznmsft
      OP
So each year you would get 35k/4years worth of stock? I am trying to research this on blind, can you point to any post that explains details of this salary structure in blind?
Also how does stock gets paid within that year? Quarterly?
      Jul 16
    • Microsoft likeops
Yes you’ll get stock on top of bonus. Usually stock amount is similar to the cash bonus, but you’ll get only 1/4th of it every year, so it’s peanuts compared to cash.
      Jul 16
    • Samsung amznmsft
      OP
But you will get it every year, so 4th year it will be lot more?
      Jul 16
    • Microsoft P Zezima
Yes, they vest quarterly (so the entire amount vests over 20 quarters). And yes, they stack every year, so after the 5th year you would be vesting 35k every year. But note that if the stock range is 0-35k, then the median employee will get 17.5k.

Thank you guys for all the response. I am going to go with Amazon offer, going to ask them to go higher on base and may add some stocks to make it competitive with Ms offer. I know it is not a popular decision, but I talked with both hiring managers and just find AWS EC2 work more exciting than what visual studio team has to offer. Also I am more attracted towards Amazon than Microsoft so I am biased as well. But in all thanks for all the inputs.
