Offer evaluation Facebook vs Uber

I'm currently deciding between FB (L6) and Uber (5b). It has been tough to decide because I keep flipping between them every now and then. Some additional information below.

Nature of work and team:
Similar at both companies

Commute:
FB is way better since I live in Mountain View and don't plan to move. I don't mind the commute to city too much since I can work on Caltrain.

Compensation (Base/Bonus/Stock/TC):
Uber: 210k/30k/1.05m/500k (RSUs at current FMV)
FB: 220k/45k/1m/515k

What would you recommend if I'm optimizing for career growth and future potential of RSUs? Uber stock seems undervalued looking at some reports and Fb stocks has tanked recently making it attractive if I can join soon.

Yep. And the people who make OxyContin help people reduce their pain. If people use it for other ways- it’s not their responsibility

And @uber. Uber used to, now it traps people in low income jobs. You really think the people who drive for you are part time drivers?

And yes. Airbnb is destroying the market in some cities. Landlords renting on Airbnb and not leasing their units.

Okay, so there is some subtlety here about when you should call a company immoral. I don’t think you can blame Airbnb for those market effects. For Uber I’m more open to being convinced, but is it really true that it traps drivers in a low wage job? Weren’t the people who drive for Uber already trapped in low wage jobs, and simply chose driving for Uber as a better alternative for working at Walmart?

Airbnb knows about the laws their users are breaking, and so they do anything to stop it? Airbnb can easily build in features to make sure people don’t break the law- but they don’t care because they get paid if they allow illicit activities.

Uber offers car loans to people so they can drive with Uber. Those loans trap people into a platform that pays them as little as they can. People who drive Uber part time as a side gig are non existent. The only people who drive Uber do it as much as they can because that’s what they do for a living. Nobody who has money drives for Uber in any serious volume.

And is Uber better for working for Walmart? Walmart hires employees and they get some shitty benefits. Uber doesn’t even do that. They actively fight to prevent the worker protections that you and I enjoy.

    Uber is the better pick.

    1. Dara a leader who is a grown up, take responsibility, and building a team of grown ups, and seasoned veterans.

    2. Expanding into many forms of transportation.

    3. Pre-ipo

That FB offer is amazing, congrats! Uber is paper money and they'll get slaughtered in public market. Getting into now low price at FB would rule

Thanks! I have mixed feelings about uber equity. On one side I feel I'll be able to buy it cheap after IPO. On the other side, I'm worried about missing out on a great deal if stock pops and stays high after IPO

It prolly won’t pop. You can prolly safely assume that both companies right now are slightly undervalued for the current market. FB is closer to true value though. However Uber’s true value might be closer to 90B, so you get a 50% equity boost just by joining now. But it’s going to be more volatile than FB as soon as it IPOs. In fact, most tech IPOs tend to suck (snapchat was down more than 50% for lockup, as was FB). So in terms of psychological control, how good are you at knowing when to sell? IMO, with your really high equity package, that question is more important. FB seems like the better choice if you have a tendency to panic.

Oh also note that tax might be an issue if Uber IPOs in 2+ years

Congrats on full vesting with DD! Your equity package with either FB or UB is prolly way less than what you got from door dash

Facebook. No guarantee uber will IPO and working on Caltrain is a little doubtful as you might not be able to find a seat

  • Uber is still pre-IPO. A bit more risk, but also potentially a bit more reward on those RSUs.

Reading all the wlb horror stories from FB, I’d pick Uber every time. Comparable TC for sane hours at Uber vs insane hours at FB (<=40 vs 60+), barely a choice imo.

Your TC at uber is mins the stock for at around 1.5 years, you can’t sell them right away, and it takes a year to vest, and this is with you hoping they ipo in 1 year.

The market will probably crash in the next 1-2 years, so where would you be better off at that point? If you choose fb you’ll have real money in a year and a good company on your resume. You’d be able to pivot elsewhere from there. If either company fails, fb would still look better on your resume.

  • Target / Eng .¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Facebook. The RSU values are not ethereal like Uber’s. Until Uber goes IPO anything they offer in RSUs just dilutes their values. Besides they’ll likely have a 6 month clause where preferred shares from Investors get to be sold first as they look to exit, this forgoing your TC value.
