Offer evaluation Google L4 vs FB E5

6 years@ Amazon, L5.

FB: 200/600/100
G: Recruiter says an offer close to this is pending approval. And saying 350K is already out of band for L4.

I’m leaning towards FB at this moment because one level higher (I know it’s not 100% match). FB WLB said to be bad, google L4 would be very comfortable. Thoughts?

This. FB E5 will fare better in the long run. It's going to take a while to get to L5 at Google.

Why make $100 working one year, when you can make $1 each year working 100 years

If he's going to make comparable comp to FB with less stress, does that really matter?

But I heard they have good refresh bonus afterwards. Is it not? Maybe one year is not too long. At least get the additional 100k, then boomerang for L6 or higher at amazon

This is essentially a choice between a growth opportunity and rest-and-vest. We all need periods of both, really.

Personally, I’m keen on the fact that economies are predictably cyclical and we’re about due for a recession (however major or minor it turns out to be). Resting and vesting doesn’t seem like a sensible choice under those circumstances.

I agree with everything you wrote until the last part. In a recession resting and vesting is exactly where you wanna be. No expectactions no disappointments.

Expectations change for everybody in a recession. The most important thing to be during the lean times is valuable--valuable to your organization, and valuable to others (by continuing to develop and maintain your skills). That's exactly the opposite of what you are when you're resting and vesting.

If you're already drifting, odds are that you won't even be given a chance to get back up to speed. You'll just be laid off.
