Hello, I'm a new grad with 2 offers on the table. One from Atlassian, one from Amazon. I interviewed with Amazon 9 months ago and received the offer a few days ago. However, due to the long duration, I thought they had abondoned me. During this time, I've already accepted Atlassian's offer. However, I want to go somewhere where I can learn the most. TC is similar for both, but as a new grad, where do you think I can learn the most? I'm not interested in money too much at this stage of my life, so I'm more focused on growing. I really liked Atlassian'a culture, but I've heard Amazon engineers are pretty smart. I have no idea on Atlassian's engineering talent. Any advice?
What Amazon team?
Unfortunately, they said they'll do team assignment after I accept the offer.
Hmmm. With Amazon is always tricky. Some teams are amazing and other teams are total bullshit. Either way if you’re smart and with potential you will be fine. You can always transfer to another team if it turns out you get a bullshit team. Amazon used to have a rule that allowed people to switch teams only after certain time, but not anymore. Also, as a rule of thumb never believe on the crap people post here. Amazon is a huge company. There are always loud low performers who will blame their incompetence on others.
Atlassian, because, to quote yourself, "I really liked Atlassian's culture."
Do you have any feedback on Amazon's culture? Mostly what I've heard is that Amazon is mostly team based. Some teams are great, others are a dead end. But anything aside from that?
I haven't worked at either place, so I can't comment. Amazon does seem to get a bad rap from some quarters.
Atlassian, smaller company will have more growth opportunities and easier access to the senior people you want to learn from. Also moving around inside the company will be easier.
As an Amazonian, I strongly believe our culture and experience are underrated. I love working here (I’m in retail). Of course your mileage may vary.
Amazon is a stronger brand for your resume. I have been here 4 years and am having a good time.
The fact that Amazon took so long to get back to you and continues to be vague in the role you’d be filling should be huge warning signs of what is to come.
That’s actually super atypical of amazon. We strive to get back to candidates with hiring decisions within 5 days. HR has some promise they are supposed to follow. New grads are also able to request teams and will usually placed there if headcount allows.
Well the poll results make it even harder...
“Amazon engineers are pretty smart”. The top level engineers: very likely. The bottom sde3 or less: not really. So if that’s the reason, I think Atlassian engineers are in no way less “smart” than Amazon’s.
As an Amazonian, I can say this is true. I met extremely smart SDE2s or SDE1s over time too, but they are very rare.
Which company did you decide on and how has it gone?
Thank you! But do you have a reason?
Amazon is horrible. I work with many ex amazon they tell such stories. Also they are smart but not great team mates.
