I am a new grad, compensation is higher at MS.

At Okta I’ll have a better team and larger impact but what is more important at this stage?

Is Microsoft name brand better than Okta? Is team impact more important?

What is Okta’s reputation?

Okta is a successful well run startup. And an acquisition target. But okta by its nature is better off as a standalone company. I can even see it get to a billion in annual revenues.

Focus on the actual role and skills/ tech. That should be a higher weight in decision making this early in your career.

As a new grad, I’d pick the job that would allow me to learn and grow the fastest.
Your goal should be to build your skill set and show success. Also, heavily favor a good manager.

I think Okta is better for that, but I start at Microsoft Monday so not sure what to do

So you already accepted Microsoft and are considering reneging? That’s a different conversation. Unless you are convinced that Okta is going to be a significantly better opportunity (and maybe it is so give it some real thought), I’d just stick with Microsoft and see how things go

    • Agreed that pulling the rug out from under any company you’ve already committed to is a different conversation altogether. Good luck (not in a sarcastic way) at Microsoft; I hope it goes well. For anyone else weighing a decision like this I can tell you I started my career at Okta and think it has been great so far. They really want you to succeed and they value your growth. One of the great things for a new grad is that it’s very easy to get face-to-face time with people who are experts in their area and they can and will help you learn very quickly. Even on the most “narrowly” focused teams there’s a lot of working with different parts of the organization and being exposed to new things.
