I have worked in technology consulting and have an interest in moving to more corporate finance or financial advisory type role. Having an undergrad degree in information systems management, I was curious how an online Masters in Finance would help bolster my otherwise limited finance experience. I have been looking into University of Oklahoma’s program as it seems to be a great value but not sure if it is worth it if Its not going to make my resume stronger. Any thoughts greatly appreciated on moving from technology consulting to more financial oriented role.
That’s not going to help you. Finance especially is very much prestige and network driven. MBA at a top school is your best bet.
Agreed. Online degree isn’t worth it unless you do it just to get the credits like many do it to qualify for a CPA exam.
Bad advice. There are several corp finance roles and even more companies there is no set rule on what they prefer. Fb loves them investment bankers and consultant types but not everyone does. But yea in person mba is better imo online degrees have a stigma Edit: the original commenter deleted their post, it said dont do mba finance jobs are all about prestige and network.
Look into Duke. They have an online MBA but you go to campus 2 weeks per semester. It is prestigious and would open lot of door after graduation.

My 2c, while also agreeing with the people above is - specifically for asset management- find a spot at a hedge fund or some big buy side firm and get a technology position working with front office. I’ve worked in a few places that had a lot of people transition from technology to business this way. One place even had a moratorium on hiring away technology workers as the tech org could never compete on comp
Not worth it. Dont do it. Save your money, unless your current employer pays for it. In that case, get an MBA. First hand experience.
In 2019 - most online programs are hidden so employers can’t tell campus vs online delivery methods. MBA’s are generally viewed better than masters in finance, economics or XYZ.
If you are interested in finance, then go for a CFA over an online masters in finance. CFA is the highest accreditation you can get to work in the field of finance and is well respected around the world.
CFA helps a little for research but not so much for IB/PE/S&T/VC. Still better than an online masters in finance though. I'd rather go the tech route than the finance route though.
