I am seeking advice from a communication standpoint. A lot of the team members I work with always end written communication (over teams/jabber/text etc) with “...” opposed to just “.” I’ve always taken ending a sentence with “...” as continuing a thought or maybe not having confidence in the other person. Is there a reason so many men end sentences with “...” and should I be concerned I’m not communicating concisely enough with them? It honestly kind of makes me feel stupid, as if they are indicating that I don’t understand what I’m being told. Totally random but I’ve noticed this pattern and want to make sure I’m effectively communicating. Any perspective would be appreciated. I work with a team of rockstar dudes it’s just intimidating at times.
What’s their age group? Generally a lot of workers, men and women in generation X love to write with “...” and it upsets me too. If you know them well enough and they don’t talk condescending to you usually, they probably don’t know that it comes off that way. You could bring it up with one of them if you’re close with them, or try to understand that maybe they just might not understand that it’s a weird thing to do. I hate it but people talk like that a lot in that generation, and the older ones.
Guilty. Hmmmm. Never thought it could be used to sound condescending. I prefer to use my words. Still I love my ... and will use it forever.
I understand :) no worries. Feel free to keep doing it.
Not sure what you’re on about...
Hey you’re the funny dude
Pay no mind, it’s just a style of written communication. A moderately irritating one if you ask me
Wow now “...” is offensive.
Its a #microaggression, you bro-grammer
Meaning
It is a very nuanced thing. It might indicate less than absolute certainty. It might indicate a continuing thought.
The guys on my team are great. I’m lucky, because I know what it’s like to work with assholes. That isn’t the case. The age group varies. Honestly I’m one of the youngest on the team so maybe it’s just me interpreting things. We’re also super culturally diverse to one posters point. Our team has people from all over the world on it. I know them well enough to ask directly. Great advice, thanks :)
No problem! That’s probably it then. Our generation (I’m pretty young too) grew up knowing an “internet language” where the smallest things can change the meaning and tone of something. If they’re great, nice guys it’s definitely something they don’t mean to come off as. No worries :)
Oh my god - now '...' is another metoo. Hey get over it and stop playing victim card everywhere
Wah-wah. I'm a privileged male who can't take other people questioning my privilege. 🙄
Wah ji wah, by just looking at my comment you guessed my gender. Dumbo, I am only female in my team
I know someone who uses “...” constantly. I don’t really like it as I feel it looks passive aggressive but it’s just his style. (I’ve asked him about it)
I do this all the time and I'm not Indian or have Male genitalia. It's just a typing style...typically I just use one period for serious emails and messages. But if it's just a quick note...it is.
Okay thanks; good point.
