Onsite with Uber

Late last year I did an onsite interview with Uber. That came after 3 months of trying to schedule it. I didn't get the offer. One of interviews was people or management style. There was this sr engineering manager, who asked me if I had a defined vision and mission statements for my team. And, I said these statements don't add much value. He was not happy with my answer. Are vision and mission statements important at Uber and do they help?

I cannot speak for Uber, but in general for leadership position I think it’s very important. You set the tone and culture, motivate your employees and inspire them to move towards something. It’s like a rallying cry or a cheerleading slogan. Like obama’s Hope or trumps MAGA(though this is meaningless it captured his campaign promises in a way) Hillary could never decide on a catchy one until very late - stronger together is a statement not a slogan.

"Doesn't add value" is not a good interview answer even if you don't believe in it :-)

Yeah, that’s a dealbreaker for me too. When you’re building the future, vision and mission statements matter a lot.

I agree that everyone in the group has to be aligned with company goals. But, honestly how many of you remember your teams vision statement?
