I’m working at Oracle as an Applications Developer. I have received an offer from Microsoft Azure today. I am currently in Bay Area but Microsoft’s offer is in Seattle. TC for Microsoft is 175k where as TC at Oracle is 155k. YoE: 2 I did my undergrad at Stanford and grad school at Cornell. I feel that my manager at Oracle is not so supportive. Heck he didn’t know how H1B visa works. Oh yes, I’m an international student and I still have two more tries for H1B. Plus I read news about Oracle’s layoffs today. This situation doesn’t abate what I’m feeling definitely. What would folks here on blind suggest? The only reason I am a bit thinking about moving to Seattle is because my girlfriend is in Bay Area. Any advice is appreciated. (Puns are also appreciated 🍿)
ask MS for stock matches with your oracle package. I guess your base looks fine and the only problem might be the stock. WA does not have state tax and crazy housing costs, so if you may have more money in pocket, even with a lower package.
How much stock do you think I can ideally ask for? Currently they’re giving 130k in stocks.
@OP What level you got at MS?
Why is this even a question? Oracle is shit hole compared to MS!
Also, Cost of living is a lot lower in the Redmond area. It's still expensive but not like the Bay area. Hell, you can still find houses for 300k if you don't mind having an 1+ hour commute (and the Connector makes that easy... You get Wi-Fi, comfortable bucket seats, and a bathroom).
Which year pass out are you at Stanford ?
Why are you even considering man?
MS is this even a real question?
Sadly yes. It’s just that it’s been only one year since I started working at Oracle. But yeah, I’d welcome insights on my decision.
1)175k in Seattle is a.lot. more than 155k in the Bay. 2) MS has an awesome CEO that has adopted an excellent strategy so much so that even googlers are somewhat jealous. 3)MS benefits are nearly unbeatable. That’s just for starters.
