Our whole team works from home on fridays!

We have really good synergy in our team
High productivity
Excellent customer service aka fixing/solving problems the minute they show up
Always available online

But we work from home every friday and today we were asked not to do that by higher management and the reason given was optics.

Are they right? How does it work in your company or department?

oh yeah! TC: 205

No idea, I don't work on an Indy team. But that's all ExactTarget stuff and I haven't really heard good things about that org

How is Bloomberg? I've been daydreaming about it for a while but can't get reliable info if it's nice for devs or not

I like Bloomberg. Mileage varies depending on department/team. And nobody will actually tell you the good teams for fear of outing themselves on blind.

I like Bloomberg also. Been there almost 10 years. Was at a few different joints before. Great atmosphere and challenging problems.

Just jumping in to say I also love working at Bloomberg. Can confirm mileage really varies by team. Been here 6 years now and always wondered where the horror stories came from til a couple years back this team I joined was awful. Switched again shortly after. My experience has been much more good than bad.

      Glad you moved quickly idFR43.

Since we’ve pushed internal mobility more in ENG (like not needing to wait 18 months between moves), I think those teams that can’t keep talent are getting more scrutiny. And obviously way better for the teams who can 😀

Agree that YMMV- been in various roles over my time here. The reputation precedes itself more than the experience it offers, IMO. I hear it’s great for Devs/ENG, though.

Old school lack of trust of employees is common.. Out of sight out of mind. But to be fair alot of wfh is BS and people are slacking off. But many are more productive and/or need flexibility since the job on its own sucks.

    You can always quit

This. It's an employee by employee thing if it increases or decreases productivity. A good manage should be able to manager that

Do it anyway, higher ups always say that and then work from home themselves anyway

They have some 2nd grade policies.. like public shaming you for forgetting your badge, in the name of security.. which is never an issue when they need you on weekend, nights, etc..

Oh man that's brutal. My current place (not Dollar Shave Club) does that and it sucks. I forgot mine on the first week and everyone saw that I had to wear a paper temporary one

Suck it up. Half of you work from home on alternate fridays.

I’m sure “something” happened. Nobody just took it upon themselves to make your life worse.

You can ask HR to amend your employment contract to officially mandate your W days each week and the process is really easy and straight forward. A simple SDSK ticket. It's mostly just about team dynamics. If the team agrees there will be no negative impact then it's all good.

Aside from that, I've had ~40-60 W-day years. Know some with ~100 W-days. I've never had an issue with it.

At the same time I know some people who take W a lot and just watch TV all day and never get anything done. There will always be some who abuse it. IMO allowing that to continue to happen is more the manager's fault. They should know if someone is consistently slacking off.

Interesting thing happened to me in the past. Was working 2-3 times remotely per week getting my stuff done. Manager asked me to come into work at least 4 days due to optics. I politely agreed, didn’t do it, next thing you know my manager started working remotely 2-3 times a week as well 😐 only optics when it’s convenient

I work from home whenever I feel like not going to office. No one cares if I’m on office or home as long as I get the shit done. BTW, higher management never show up on Friday. Guess they work from home too :/

Bloomberg isn't modern that way. HR frown upon too many W days. Maybe they just don't trust us.

my TL takes sick days every Monday and Friday lol. I don't think HR cares so much as long as his manager allows it.
