I got word today from my manager that I got put on PIP. My colleagues also think it is bullshit as my work is good but there’s nothing I can do at this point, as it’s likely due to politics. I’m still waiting for the H1B approval (won lottery) and am on a TN visa (Canadian). A few question for Blind: 1. How much of a death sentence is PIP? 2. Can I switch jobs pre-receipt? 3. If I get fired pre-receipt, do I keep my H1B? How long can I stay in the country? 4. I was told approval would come around September. Is this true? General advice is also welcome. Feeling shitty
There are two types of PIPs, one to get you out the door and one to get you focused. Let's assume it's if the second one, then just do what they ask and after it is past go find a new role. If it is the first and you have verbally been told, you might not be able to switch roles pre-receipt. PIPs usually last 3 - 6 months and you can stay employed for that long and exit with a package, get a new employer, or tell them to fuck it and leave now. I personally would wait to see what the plan detailed.
There is only one type and it's the first
Not true uijjw, the second exists, even if rare. I know someone at G who turned around from not meeting expectations, through pip, to meets and later exceeds expectations, all in the same team with the same manager.
A PIP is something you can overcome, but only if you can determine what it is you are doing that is causing your manager to perceive your performance negatively. No need to respond here, but a question to contemplate is - if you were your manager, what would you think about your performance. And then - why would your manager think that, what is it that you are or are not doing today that is causing his or her frustration with you? Your questions lead me to believe you aren’t 100% convinced your manager isn’t in fact being fair to suggest you need to improve...growing companies need good people to keep growing, and even poor managers need a team of strong performers to keep succeeding - if you want to beat the PIP - your answer is found in figuring out where you and your managers expectations are misaligned. As for your teammates - I wouldn’t look to them for honest assessment; unless it’s anonymous, most people aren’t going to tell you straight up what the problem is. Ironically, this comes from a place of good, but the inability to be transparent with you is actually more harmful than their desire to avoid being radically candid. This is all generic advice - but we don’t know each other so what else is an option really :)
Look elsewhere ASAP for backup
Agree with previous posts, it's most likely over, unless you understand where you don't meet expectations and believe you know how to fix it. Often if they just want you out they'll invent weird impossible criteria such as "All your PRs should get approved without any comments" or "finish x project without help and without any bugs opened on it". Considering the visa status, I would try to draw out the pip as long as possible so you can potentially get the h1b and transfer it before it's over. Other than that, leetcode and schedlue interviews.
Uber PIPs are one month. So you will be out of a job before your h1b shows up. My advice to you is talk to your manager and explain the h1b situation. Most managers genuinely just don't understand how that works. Tell him you'll work until October and quit. Unless your manager is a complete asshole he will understand. Actually even if he is a complete asshole he will probably take that deal because having you around for an extra month is probably peanuts for him compared to dealing with the PIP. Don't try to beat the PIP. It's a useless exercise and a sure means to strain relations.
Is it worth raising hell with HR or the manager above if the Perf peer reviews don’t match up with what she is saying? Even if to extend until the visa gets through?
Look. I understand it sucks. But raising hell with HR especially when you are in or near a PIP is extremely unlikely to produce results. HR will view your claims with even more scepticism than usual because they're coming from someone on a PIP. If you don't get the process extended long enough you will have burned through any budget of goodwill you had and they will probably happily fire you two days before your h1b shows up. Feel free to dm me if you want to discuss this more but I'd strongly recommend not going down the route of pissing off your manager.
How often are people given PIP ?
Unless your h1b is approved you do not have an h1b. No one knows when you get the approval. Can be September or later. Can get rfe.
Sorry but there is no other go .. just finish off your PIP. Camp at your office if you have to.. anyways with new rules you have 2 months to find a job in worst case scenario after the layoff .. but atleast trust me it’s really worth trying to do your best in PIP so you won’t repent later.
You can check what you need to accomplish to pass the PIP and decide if it's reasonable. Most likely it's not, and usually PIP is designed to be non passable. Start looking for another job right away. How long have you been at Uber?
10 months. So not long :(
