I’m not getting much traction with my resume for some reason despite 8.5 years with Amazon working on tech like Alexa. Can someone take a look at my resume and give me a sense of why senior program manager/senior product manager roles aren’t working out? I’m not even getting phone screens for some reason.
I will also review but I am a total hardass when it comes to resumes. 😉 PgM resumes should be parade of measurable outcomes that you delivered. Sadly, most PgMs don’t even realize that’s precisely the job they’ve been hired to do, so their resumes are a mountain of fluff. They struggle to even articulate the definition of an outcome in their resumes or in interviews. :/ (much less their role in delivering that outcome). PM resumes should also be outcomes-driven but directly related to the metrics your products and features directly impacted (DAU, A/MRR, RPV lift, etc). The best PM and PgM resumes make you believe you’re looking at a future product-driven CEO or COO, respectively (or at least someone you’d entrust with a major piece of your product or operations org). If you have defined a measurable outcome and/or set of metrics for every role you’ve had, and clearly-defined your role in achieving each, DM me and I’ll gladly review. Yeah I would love for you to take a look. My PM time is... unique. You will see what I mean.
What makes you believe the reason you aren’t getting any traction is your resume? I hope you are networking your way into referrals, for a start. That guarantees you a phone screen at many companies. So my question is: as a PgM/PM, what data do you have to support your theory that your lack of traction is related to your resume?
I have started working my connections. It’s tough though as most of my connections are either at Amazon or not at a company I am interested in. So I am relying on my resume to get me noticed. And instead I am getting no responses from my job apps.
Amazon has a crazy high attrition rate. After 9 years there, I would think you’d have contacts at every major tech company in Sea or BA (depending on your location). Send it over but I can tell you right now that counting on your resume—particularly if you have a blended PgM/PM background (which may be confusing to many recruiters and even hiring managers, if not properly presented)—is part of the problem. My advice: - Tailor the hell out of your resume to each role, and add a Highlights section at the top that showcases 3 *relevant* products/features or outcomes you delivered (with metrics); and - Decide which role you’re going after. I am one of those people who does not believe someone is equally good at program management as they are at product management. Figure out which one you’re best at/enjoy the most, and go for that role. You’ll just be pissing in the wind otherwise eg wasting effort.
I really appreciate you helping me. You are making a lot of sense. My pm experience is weird. I can’t say why, it would identify me. I think I need to frame it differently as you suggest.
Happy to take a look - PM me.
Happy to help. You can PM me too. I might come across a bit harsh when it comes to feedback.
I am a PM with 6yoe (and 5yoe as SDE before PM) Happy to help, PM me :)
PM me. Have 5 yoe mostly in early stage but my resume has an incredible ratio application to interview.
PM me I will review for you
