Passed my on-site, but need a team. Any leads on SDE I positions at Amazon?

Heard from my recruiter at Amazon today that I can be offered a SDE I position, but I had been interviewing for level II, so we need to find an open spot at SDE I. Apparently, these openings are thin at the moment. Anyone know of an opening I could look into? The recruiter is looking, but I’d like to be proactive.

Can confirm, as an SDE1, they are few and far between.

I guess they recently made offers to previous interns, which filled up a lot of the lower positions. 😖 Timing is everything...

Ya, that’s true, but that’s the same every year it seems. AWS is hiring quite a bit right now. I’d be surprised if they weren’t hiring SDE1s.

  • Short answer is, well, good luck. AWS and Devices are hiring openly, but mostly at SDE2 level or above. And you don't really want to work for devices unless you're a massochist, so, if you want, get your foot in the door and look to transfer out in 6 months

Cool, thanks. Let me know what team you’re on and I’ll be happy to avoid working with you.

I don’t need to: we’re not hiring sde1 so we’re avoiding you! Already bottom heavy and no need to make it worse. We can chat in a few years!

College hire and interns are plenty enough and they don’t come with bad habits like industry hire sde1 do.

Ping hiring managers on LinkedIn and ask if they are hiring offer ready SDE1s. It is ultimately up to them who they want to hire. If you are getting an offer they think you can make the next level quicker than an intern rehire.

Thanks. My feedback was that I was borderline between I and II. I’m good with clean code and OOP, but I switched from R&D as a Mech Eng 3 years ago and my positions to date haven’t required much thought on algorithms or system design. I applied on a whim and only gave myself 3 weeks to learn all I could.

I appreciate your insight; I think the feedback from my loop will show HMs that I’ll be capable of doing SDE II work before long.
