Pay cut for better culture and better commute?

My current commute is about 1 1/2 hrs one way to San Francisco. Plus working 50 to 60 hrs/week is getting tiring. I’m trying to prioritize quality of life and family. So, I’m leaving Amazon this year. Workday is just a few mins from home. I know they’ll pay less but how is the culture? Are they ok with people working from home if needed? My mother got unexpectedly sick and even though she is recovering quickly I have had to help her schedule some medical appointments and talking to her doctors but Amazon is already retaliating because I was taking an entire hour during my lunch break. What about Workday working hours? We might try to have a baby, too. I know that wouldn’t be an easy option at my current job.

That is sick! You serious that Amazon does not let you take time off to take care of your family? Almost every company in the valley allows a day or two WFH.

Amazon New Year😎 OP Dec 31, 2018

Nope. We need to give a week notice that we’ll be taking a WFH day and manager needs to approve. If you take a last-minute WFH or PTO you’ll be threatened to be placed on a dev plan.

Damn! That’s way too aggressive. Is that in all Amazon? Or just your team?

You work to live, not live to work. Knows what is more important in your life

That’s true.

When you're old, will you look back and say, I wish I'd spent more time commuting, more time away from my family...?

Good point.

Sounds like you just need a new team, or you're just assuming the things that aren't true. Are you saying if you aren't at your desk all day working, your manager says something to you? I make personal calls at work anytime i need to, as well as everyone i work around. I've literally gone to the gym and worked out in the middle of the day and then came back to work. Nobody i work around expects you to tell everyone where you are at all times in the day. People on my team have meetings all the time with other teams. Nobody on my team expects me to tell them where i am when I'm not at my desk. Nobody that i work around cares as long as you get your shit done. I've had multiple managers above me take full parental leave when they were having babies and came back with no issues, and still managers. Either your team sucks ass because of a shitty manager, or it's just all in your head and you live your life in fear and just assume everything you do is always wrong and bad. What do you even mean when you say Amazon is retaliating because you take a full lunch break? My team goes out to lunch together all the time, including managers, and sometimes we'll be gone over 1.5 hours. Are you just underperforming so your manager isn't happy with you? If that's not the case, then just take control of your own life and find a team with better work culture. Don't just sit there in self pity and playing the victim. Do something to improve your situation, because it sounds like you've just let this happen to yourself for a while

Well, I’ve tried switching teams and my manager said that H1B visa transfers need to be approved by managers. My original teammates are gone. I’m the only one that has lasted almost 2 years. A coworker that also tried switching teams was placed in a dev plan right before he started the process. He left the company right away but he is American.

Your manager sounds like shit. Talk to your skip level manager about how you don't feel you have adequate opportunities on this team to reach next level and ask about other teams in your org or under them that you could possibly switch to. Skip managers would much rather keep you in the area if you're a decent employee than see you leave the area or company.

What team in SF?

1.5 hrs commute and 50-60 hour work weeks?? Stop right there. I wouldn’t sign up for that even if you paid me 500k+ TC. The money isn’t worth the stress and all that time wasted sitting in a car. Living close to work and WLB is incredibly important to me when I consider a new job. Will gladly take a small pay cut to get it in this job market, but often times I don’t have to. There are many better employers compared to Amazon that offer better WLB and pay more. If that kind of company isn’t near me, I will gladly move closer to the company to work there before settling down with a family and child.

From what I heard, Workdays wlb is amazing. Tons of mothers work at workday.

I heard workday has its own awkward programming language that takes months of training to master and it obviously only applies to workday. I would be cautious about doing this.

Workday is the best in regards to work life balance! Amazon sucks. Make the switch.
