Just started a new job (won’t say where). Anyway my first paycheck finally came in and was a bit more than I expected. Another check just came for three times that amount too. Total amount adding up to 10% of my annual base. Clearly a mistake. Any advice on what should I do? Has this ever happened to you? Could it be a test of character?
Literally the exact same thing happened to me at a startup some years back. It was a fuckup that would have been undetected but I let them know and returned the difference. Definitely regret not just keeping my mouth shut.
Companies do periodic payroll reconciliation. Some years back we had an incompetent at the helm of payroll and this person kept forgetting to file PTO and unpaid time off for people (notably me) ... by the time they were fired, I managed to have a zero paycheck and a next one undersized even after having all my by the accrued vacation wiped out.
No need to do anything. Did you check your payslip? If its not in the payslip, it could be deducted soon from hour account.. happened to a friend before.
Keep an eye on it to see how long it goes on, make note of the actual paystub breakdown (gross, bonus, benefits, taxes, etc), then either invest it knowing they could fire you and get full payment of every penny overpaid with [generally] no limit to number of years passed or let them know. It may also be a chargeable crime depending on your jurisdiction not to mention the civil side.
Do the honest thing and tell your employer. It’s probably a mistake and very unlikely to be a test of character, but they will figure it out sooner or later.
They will figure it out come tax time. Larger companies have internal audits every few months.
Be honest.
15 days vs 2 weeks?
In California it’s illegal for a company to solicit a refund for overpayment. I learned that the hard way after I paid it back like a sucker. Keep the money and act like you don’t check your account if anyone asks
Really? Dang.
If u keep it and they find out, they will simply deduct it from future lay AND you look like a piece of shit to them! Be honest and give it back, don’t fuck your future for some small ass short gain
sign on bonus?
nope, or at least they didn’t tell me i was getting one.
