There’s a meme floating around the “right” side of my Facebook feed suggesting that if Trump is impeached, tried, and convicted, Pence should just pardon him and re-install him as president. Ignoring the fact that this isn’t how the government works... I’m very curious about why this is becoming such a popular idea. In this scenario, there’s enough evidence that Trump broke the law, he’s found guilty in court, and goes to jail. Why is it, to some people, in this case he should be pardoned and then resume his presidency? I’m genuinely curious what people’s thoughts are.
Trump getting impeached is just a wet dream of the left. Ain’t gonna happen.
But if it did...would you want to see him pardoned? If so, why?
I tend to agree. We can all clutch our pearls every time he says something stupid - but that solves nothing. Especially if no one wants to hold him accountable (good or bad). Let this shit play out. If he burns it all down, then fuck it. It’s the far rights chess move at this point. Whatever happens after he leaves will be the fault of the right - good or bad.
Pence can pardon Trump, but a President removed via conviction cannot be re-installed. Only idiots think that's possible. A President Pence would be a nightmare for liberals. He's extremely conservative and unlike Trump, is disciplined and principled.
So, your line of thinking is: should Trump be impeached and convicted, Pence should pardon him because the far left prefers him to Pence? Did I get that right?
Even if Pence pardoned Trump, the latter would not be President. As soon as the Senate convicts a sitting President with two-thirds of the vote, he is immediately removed from office and deprived of secret service protection and other benefits. So if Pence were to pardon Trump, he would be pardoned as a private citizen and be immune from imprisonment. But he will not become President again. If I were a liberal, I would not want Trump to be convicted since Pence would be a greater threat.
What would he be convicted for?
I’m not asking if he will be convicted. I’m not interested in your opinions on that. The question is: If Trump were to be impeached and then convicted, would Pence pardoning him and re-installing him as president be a good idea?
It doesn’t matter if it’s a good idea or a bad idea - there’s no legal process in which that can happen. If T is removed from office after impeachment hearings, P becomes president. If P pardons T, T is free from any federal charges. He cannot become president again without be re-elected to the position. Some people might wish that could happen, because they think T is what’s best for the country, or T can do no wrong, or whatever reason, but it cannot legally happen.
Shitler is infallible in the eyes of his supporters. Witch hunt remember?
All of that aside... in a scenario where evidence is provided, the Supreme Court convicts, and he’s hauled off to jail, maybe I’m struggling to imagine how a reasonable person would still have doubts.
Your mistake is assuming, still, that these people are reasonable. You may think this is dismissive / arrogant but 100% serious that they can’t be reasoned with. Maybe they’ll come around 4 years after he gets impeached but I’m not holding my breath. Fox News has rotted so many peoples’ brains.
