Myself as a Computer science background have a question for my wife’s career. She just moved to states with a 4 years degree of Bachlors of Pharmacy. She was originally planning to study Pharm. D with 4-5 years university program. But some people who are in Pharmacy field didn’t recommend her to pursue Pharm D. just because they think Pharmacy market is saturated. plus 4-5 years of study will cost around 200K + licensing. Plus uncertainty of pharmacy job market as AI and automation influence.. That made me thing whether she should change her field to CS? in that case she has to start with undergrad 3 years study as a post-bacc program. any suggestions friends? any other alternatives in terms of area of study? FYI, she has a green card so no visa issues/restrictions. thanks! 😊
Can she just go to general med school?
With any major or any focus area?
What is she interested in? Not to say money is unimportant, but she'll do better at something she is interested and enjoys rather than solely picking the most profitable.
That’s what I thought about and we discussed. Since her background is in Pharmacy, she is more leaning toward s medical field but she is also open to engineering education.
She might look into medical fields outside of being a doctor. Being a med tech, nurse, nurse practitioner, physicians assistant, or pathologists assistant all pay decently and might be more in her area of interest without requiring med school.
I just finished pharmacy school. I would not recommend it to anyone at this point honestly. However if she does have a B. Pharm, to my understanding, she should be able to practice as a pharmacist already. But anyway about pharmacy: 1.) Most places are over saturated. That's not to say you cant get a job it just probably won't be in a good area 2.) If you do want a job that you like you and not just counting pills you need a residency (which are extremely difficult to get and are rather expensive to apply to as well) and probably a board certification (even more money and you have to keep it current) 3.) it's ridiculously expensive. I have just under $250,000 in loans and I went to a cheaper 3 year program with no undergraduate debt. 4.) I could be wrong but pharmacy really seems to be going downhill in general. Pharmacy doesn't have a very good lobbying presence and it's all about money to the employers 5.) The national board association keeps approving more schools of pharmacy to open even with the oversaturation issue being ever present.
Thanks skipbo. It totally makes sense. Considering these points, what field as a career would you recommend? My wife has a bachelors degree from non-US country which makes her to study further before she can start a job in her field. Thanks for detailed explanation and input.
It's like you're reading my brain since this was my question. Can we connect over private message? @blackpanth
