Hello everyone! Recently I got confirmed for a phone interview I got referred to. I recently graduated in May but have a lot of solid experience and firmly believe I can compete with designers at the 3 years of experience mark. I am currently employed straight out of college and have had experience consulting, at startups, and 3 Fortune 500 companies. I am very confident in my work and my design process, and know that I can, one day in the future, be one of the best. (Cue Pokémon theme song) I recently got a generous referral from a friend, and got requested for a phone interview. The thing is, I am slightly concerned I am under qualified. It is for a person with 3 YOE, but what I’m concerned about is this position is seeking a “senior” designer, dealing with some pretty heavy stuff. The thing is, I know with enough research and questions asked, I could do the job. When reading the basic and preferred qualifications, I feel that I meet and really fit the bill. At first maybe I thought they might’ve given me this phone interview as a sort of “pity interview” and they had no intention of continuing, but why would they need to use their resources to give me that? Do you think maybe they actually believe someone straight out of college can handle this content? Do they maybe actually see something in me? I know y’all shit on Amazon a lot and it’s a good laugh, but I was preparing for the phone interview and really loved the leadership principles, and think it’d be the perfect place to really start my career and learn consistently and professionally. It seems like the exact sort of work environment I’ve been looking for and I don’t want to mess up an opportunity to work here. Any advice or input is welcomed, even if it’s nasty.
TLDR?
TLDR: Fresh grad with decent exp some reason gets a phone interview for a design job for a senior designer position? Pity interview or nah? What do?
It's just a phone screen, don't sweat, just do it. If they like you they will adjust the level they are offering. No one wastes their time on interviewing someone just for the heck, take it seriously.
Also could this lead to maybe other jobs at amazon if I do well but don’t get the job
Thank you so much for this pep talk. I needed it badly!
If they think you are great, but junior, they will just bring you in as a junior, if they can accommodate that.
Thanks for your input! :)
Honestly, there are a lot of people under qualified on paper but who can definitely do the job. Don’t worry, no such thing is a pity interview. Would be a massive waste of resources
Thanks for the reassurance!
Dude the positions are generic as fuck, don’t stress about it . Good luck !
Thanks! Generic it may be but it’s still better than my current occupation. Thanks tho! :)
“I ... really loved the leadership principles” lol, good luck, fam.
LMAO
Didn’t even know that buzzfeed was a thing anymore
