Plan for your parents?

Not really a Visa issue but this may be the best place to ask around. For us immigrants, what do you have planned for when your parents get old?

Will you bring them here? If not and if they need someone, how do you imagine to balance between you going back taking care of them and your career/family?

    This is a tricky issue.
There are legal hurdles: unless you are a citizen and can sponsor parents, the most they can live with you is 6 months every year. As parents age, traveling every year becomes difficult for them.
Even if you are a citizen, they may not want to move at such a late stage in life leaving behind their social life.

Financial: health insurance is too expensive. Most parents don't qualify for Medicaid.

Moving back comes with its own set of issues. Finding opportunities in the city they live in can be tough. If you have a family, then they may not want to relocate.

Unfortunately, many in Indian society look down on retirement homes and see it as some sort of betrayal by the child. In my personal opinion, a really good retirement home can be a great option. They get to mingle with people their own age and most importantly, have immediate access to medical help.

Retirement home *is* a betrayel. If u've earned enough in Us why do u careabt opportunities in your hometown.

Adding asterisks to verbs does not convert opinions to facts.

You and your family see it as a betrayal and while I totally respect your choice to think in a certain way, doesn't mean my opinion is incorrect.

Whether it is betrayal or not isn't really up to either of you is it? If your parents dont want to go and you make them, it's a betrayal. If they have no problems with it, it's hardly betrayal

    • Agree with you @pock. From other posts, @123raj is an entitled arrogant man who thinks only he is right and everyone should do as he did. Ignore him.

@pock- i'm not but i realize u cant have everything in life. So i'm open to adjustment. I'm willing to work for lesser salary for familial benefits. That's what i'm trying to point to you and the flaw in your thinking. There wont be a perfect solution aka u cant have best of both worlds. So be more adjusting cause money can be earned back but not lost time.

I'll try to earn as much as I could for several years (maybe till mid 30s?) then go home. Then I will try to find a mediocre job and spend time with my family and friends 😀

Haha. My home country is definitely not as good as the US, but it is also not shitty so I have no problem living there.

Agree. I am currently doing same. Unfortunately I came to US in my late 30s.. will be here till 2 more years max. Dont have lot of.money saved. But I have decided to live in tier 2 city and hence require less money. I will do some less responsible roles and have income for basic sustaining.
