Anyone else thinks software engineers and the industry ( not the investors) in general take themselves too seriously as to the value they add to society - even to the extent of taking its obvious harmful effects ( advertising etc ) as a service? Or are we just too cynical here, especially in the Bay Area?
I didn’t include the investors as it seems that they know what they are doing.
There are good and bad in every industry. Don’t stereotype.
Most products don’t add any value to the society. They do add value to the stakeholders/customers of their products. I don’t quite understand when you say software engineers taking themselves too seriously in the value they add to society. Why do you say advertising is harmful? No advertising is forced in the real world unlike that one Black Mirror episode.
Gs1faoi- there are externalities as well but even the value to the direct users seems exaggerated at times. ‘Seriously’ as in the value of the work or importance of the work in itself apart from the money that is involved.
Advertising is a whole other discussion.
I no longer believe software has helped the masses over the past 10 years. For each good thing it's provided I think there's been a greater, more detrimental thing happen to society. E.g social media connecting the world => more polarized society Feel free to angrily tell me how I'm wrong though
You’re right, but software isn’t going away so the big question is how to solve the aforementioned problems. More software? Better software? Something else entirely? People love their phones and newsfeeds...
Well of course in the US it’s not going to be forced as it’s a very free society. In fact nothing is going to be forced. Hence advertising.
I could say ‘yeah, it’s full of people from eBay’ , but meh
Don’t stress out so late in the night buddy.
With a few exceptions, software engineering is just the factory work of the twenty-first century. It even comes with repetitive stress injuries!
