Portland or Denver?

If you could choose between the two to work and raise a family, what would you choose and why? Assume you may be switching jobs over the next couple years too.

Portland has way higher quality of life in general.

Portland hands down compared to Denver in terms of opportunities. Denver is a scenic place too

Opportunities in terms of tech jobs? I always thought Denver had an advantage on this aspect

Whenever I go to Denver I see tons of drug addicts downtown, police every block. I liked other parts of Colorado much more.

Portland. Lots of great microbreweries and a fun culture.

depends what race you are. If you’re white then either city is fine. Denver too cold in the winter though.

Denver had decent job prospects but is getting more and more expensive every year. Cost of living is pretty high compared to salaries at the moment unless you get into good senior positions.

Portland

Too many homeless in Portland. Never felt safe. Much more to do in Denver with 5 major sports teams and better skiing close by. No contest.

Good point, coming from SF.. I think I had enough of living with human feces and needle everywhere

PyLadies YxPB67 May 25, 2018

How can you tell it's human (not dog) feces?

Lived in Portland for over 5 years, have only visited Denver. Denver has 300+ days of sun per year and Portland has rain mid-October through mid-May. Unless you’re going to Nike or Intel, probably Denver from an opportunity standpoint. Portland is a nice place to live/raise family, but there’s virtually nothing to do unless you like hiking.

Yahoo Lord Vader OP May 25, 2018

So you're saying tech is growing faster I'm Denver than PDX?

Nike fEMS80 May 28, 2018

The traffic in Portland is horrible. The 26 that goes east and west has a part of it between Beaverton and Portland that's congested most of the day on any given day during the week. The city infrastructure wasn't built to accommodate for a growing population, which I think is a huge factor for why Portland has limited opportunities to grow.

Google jsidbfigb May 25, 2018

Austin is just dry heat, not very humid
