Press for Startups

Oct 4 9 Comments

Hi everyone, I am a young entrepreneur managing two startups and working as a consultant for two other companies. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get started to acquire press and get published on a few relevant websites (such as Forbes, or Mashable, Buzzfeed). Any thoughts are helpful, thanks!

Hey if you don't have budget for a dedicated marketing/pr person you have your work cut out for you.

Everyone wants free coverage, but it's a two way street. You need a formalized pitch that will get the publication clicks. A unique/interesting insight from your product data set. Or a product that is riding a current trend of startups getting insane funding. Or a famous founder striking out on a new venture.

Build a relationship with the journalists at various publications, do your research and make sure you're reaching out to the JOURNALIST that covers your industry. Don't reach out to an editor saying "oh I love your writing on blah blah" because they don't write shit and will get annoyed you don't understand their job.

Also don't spam them, they only respond when it's worth their time. If it's been more than 24 hours they've seen it and chosen not to respond. Follow up once, then come up with a different pitch because they don't care.

Small details matter, spell their name correctly (seriously) or you may get permanently sent to spam.

You basically did their job for them. Some bloggers like to interview you and write their own. Some would gladly accept your article. Once that happens repeat until you have enough articles about you to ladder up to bigger press. It will take some time.

One trick I’ve done is I target specific blogs first that are good in the industry. Figure out the authors, write the article for them.

You can get a Forbes contributor to write for you. It costs money to be a contributor so I guess they will charge you for it.

Hire a PR firm if you have money. Otherwise, be your own PR firm. Tools like Elevate can help you share with social media
