Probably failed Facebook screen interview w/200LC what are my odds?

Have done about 200 LC. Haven’t interviewed in a long ass time and barely slept the night before due to nerves. I have been able to consistently solve 1 easy + 1 medium using the LC mock interview feature usually in 20-25min for Both so I figured I was good to go.

They gave an easy ass recursion problem but for some reason I mis understood the interviewer and got real nervous. Froze up a bit at the whiteboard. Wrote some code and had to erase it all and write it again. In my code I had an additional feature that I thought he was asking for and spent too much time going through examples with him about it. Finally realized he didn’t want that so I removed a coefficient from 1 line of the code resulting in the correct code. He then told me the code was good. This is the kind of question I usually bang out in 5min on LC but I was performing shitty and was massively off point mentally. Real pissed at myself.

We moved on to a LC medium (reorder linked list with O(1) space) but admitted we wouldn’t have enough time. I got a few hints on that, coded up part of the solution (reverse linked list) but ran out of time to code the rest. I gave him a description of the full algorithm and runtime.

IF didn’t F up and waste time on the first I would have had enough time to fully code that second question up. I froze up and couldn’t think straight at first.

What are my chances?

You need to do more interviews and not get hung up on any one company because no matter how prepared you are there's always a chance you just won't solve it in time.

Take your time, think through the problem a bit first, ask clarifying questions if necessary, describe your approach to your interviewer, then implement it.

Getting a solid eight hours of sleep helps too. But for sure you won't code properly if you're panicking. The part of your brain that does higher level thinking will just shut right down.

If the interviewer can see your skills past the interview, you got a good chance. If that was a dire or die interview, then probably they would reject you, in which case, continue to learn and prepare for more interviews. You'll do fine!

  • Dude LC is entirely different from real-life interviews.

The ONLY way to prepare for the pressure and adrenaline is to do more real interviews. Until you feel completely relaxed. Then you go for the FAANG.

It was a screen but not a phone screen. I went to their Cambridge office as it’s only a short walk from where I work. It was a live whiteboard interview 45min I guess for this office they often do this for the screen.

I think you’ll be fine but ymmv. Better chances if you’re experienced or if that office wants to expand a lot.

Don’t overthink it, I think you’ll be fine. Try to enjoy your weekend

It was a reject. That’s what I thought it would be not surprised.

  • For a screen probably fine especially if you have a lot of experience

I guess reject. I had a bit better experience with both solved optimally but with missed edge case, still was rejected.

You’ve got to do mock interviews. I had the same issues.

That happens though. Maybe more targeted practice would help. I like this post with detailed prep tips. Check it out
