Problems with LinkedIn as a product

I was wondering if anyone else feels that LinkedIn is inadequate as a Professional social network. And that’s why i wanted to create a space where we can have a discussion about what is missing from it.

I’ll start:
1. You cannot customize it very much, so most of the profiles look the same in a similar domain.
2. It is really hard to search for specific profiles with a particular set of skills.

I feel there is value in “consistency” of profile. They can seriously improve their job matching algo for sure.

Interesting. Does consistency help you read the profiles easily and quickly?

Certainly! Consistency is one of the tenets of a good user experience. Once you learn where to find something you expect it to be in the same place every time.

@yobs! Yes consistency does help. after so much use I am trained to look at specific sections.

I would compare it to MySpace and Facebook in the old days. You could customize you MySpace page and it made the whole experience look super confusing and clunky, compared to that the old Facebook was super clean.

Now Facebook has also become crappy and clunky, but that’s a whole diff issue

Yeah that makes sense to me and I agree, although it does make it difficult for candidates to stand out.

The UX for search is confusing, especially when you want to apply more detailed filters; like, if you want to refine the keywords, you have to do so in the global search bar?

I had a trial premium subscription and was excited to try out the salary insights feature, but I feel like it's not as comprehensive as levels.fyi or even Blind.

Their Learning offering is great though. I appreciate the small details like "audio only."

Yeah they have been leaning more towards features that make them money.

The whole search function is broken. When I search scala, LinkedIn returns jobs with 'scala'ble in the text. It is totally unusable for scala developers.

Disclaimer: I am no longer with LinkedIn

Price structure is the pain point for me. I used to use it to see what paths others have taken and how they got to where they are. Now I can do it only a limited number of times without premium..

This is a compelling way of using LinkedIn. Unfortunately my perception is that it's primarily a tool for recruiters.

Yeah it’s probably only recruiters who make up the bulk of their revenue. For employees, it seems expensive to me.
