What are the chances of landing an APM/product role as a new grad? Is it realistic? Should one look at another position before trying to transition?
It's very much possible. It depends on the company and if you're a CS grad or not. PayPal for example tends to hire only PMs with prior experience. We don't have an APM program. Others are different in that.
It is possible but most likely you will be a PM assistant, doing project management work for a senior PM. I'd not recommend it though as one needs to gain technical skills and business judgement before jumping in PM role. By going directly to PM path, you'll probably lack these skills for long time...
Check out apmlist.com. Note most companies only hire a handful for their cohort so it's a very competitive role
Went through the APM recruitment cycle and it was even more competitive than I imagined
Yep, it’s a mess!
I’ve never met a new grad product manager, almost always come from a different area
