I haven’t done shit today!
Heard some people say that its doable but wondering what the concrete next steps are. Paths? Time horizons? TC? YOE required? New grad APM program in Bay. Degree in business (non US prestigious school) + computer science All advice is appreciated but your sources / credentials would be great. Makes getting advice on blind a little more credible.
The only real ways to break into venture is to go to Harvard/Stanford or to network like mad and to be helpful to VCs for a long time. There are exceptions to this but those are the reliable paths. Of course you could go to a shitty firm but that's a bad career move. Source: In VC
Hmm let's say I can make it into some of those schools. When should I try and pivot? And once in those schools, what tier firms should I target? Like does sequoia hire new MBA grad? Which firms do? Sorry for all the Qs, feel free to answer whatever you know.
This is the correct answer. Well you just going to a mid tier school, although it sounds stupid, has already limited most chances. You’ll have to not only work in PM, but be a top tier talent where people know you just to be able to get into those schools and hope you can make a connection at a lower, new VC firm. Not the big dogs. There’s a reason why 99% cannot make it into VC. The only “reliable” path is not only going to those top schools but having those connections as well. There are outliers but they are outliers for a reason. VC is very elitist and is heavily connection-driven. Source: A family member is married to a Partner in Sequoia.
That’s awesome! Congrats on getting into a APM program. I’d love to know how the process was and how you prepared. Sorry I know off topic. I’d assume it should be doable since it will be more of a strategic role. (Just a thought)
