For a developer with 10yrs of exp, (looking for a change), which role would be better product manager (not project) or presales manger?
Compensation wise?
There are exactly two high paying tracks in the tech industry - distinguished engineer/VP engineering and VP Sales (one holding the relationship and actually making the sale) Product manager might be slightly higher paid than pre sales person with equivalent experience, in the beginning. If you're a people guy, it's easier to grow higher and manage larger teams and show impact in pre sales (thereby earning higher over time). Product manager growth may or may not happen and it's possible you just stay in the same level for many years... significantly fewer Pm positions too.
Loads of thanks.. that's really helpful đ
Product Manager is significantly better paid than Pre Sales. I know a lot of pre-sale a folks, the role gets repititive fast and people look to move out. And be ready to travel. On the other hand, downside of PM is you will get specialized in an area and difficult to change jobs. Number of PM roles open are much less compared to pre-sales
Do product management.. good fit and better career track
