I’m currently a program manager in the risk management space at Amazon. I work closely with a team of SDEs and data scientist essentially acting as a Product Manager for the tech they support. Their SDM offered me position as TPM. The opportunity interests me as it further exposes me to tech and offers greater earnings potential. However, I have little hands on tech background outside of the last few years and outside of the risk space. I’m confident that I can be successful in this particular role based on conversations with the SDM and my familiarity with the tech. However, I was reviewing TPM reqs across various tech companies and realized that I do not have the traditional background of a TPM (education/experience). How difficult would it be to get hired as a TPM by another company or transfer internally a year or two later without that background? Could I be taken seriously or filtered out by recruiters and hiring managers?
