Progressive policy going too far

I'm all for progressive policy 9x out of 10. I make way too much money, other people struggling when they are saving lives or teaching our kids, etc. But this is too much. Gig workers don't have to interview, they work their own hours, this is entirely their choice and if it weren't for Uber or Lyft they'd arguably be even worse off. The only casualty is the taxi drivers, RIP.

When is enough enough??

Disclosure: I am not invested in Uber or Lyft.

And you helped create the regulatory monster that has grown beyond your original vision. That’s how these things work.

You might be right. But I'd rather have it be a regulatory monster than... whatever is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Nowadays I find myself mostly voting No on ballet measures and propositions, except the social ones (i.e. legalizing gay marriage).

Intel you should be glad about that. Before Teddy Roosevelt we'd all be getting exploited by the Robber Barons of the 19th century. So yes, I have an idea, but it's difficult to say what it would look like today.

What Uber and Lyft are doing is exploiting the vulnerable in society. So there will be a backlash.. what is so surprising here?

If they had promised to pay minimum wage and done so from day one this wouldn't be happening.. you want to pay drivers 40 cents a mile while irs thinks it costs 50 cents a mile to maintain a vehicle.

One of the biggest components of that IRS rate is insurance. Lyft and Uber provide the insurance when a driver is online

Dude you can't pay so little it's not sustainable

I think Uber and Lyft really screwed themselves when they increased the amount they keep from drivers. Drivers complained a lot less, and I bet this bill wouldn't have had the same pressure.

Why isn't it sustainable? It sure seemed like there were hundreds of thousands of drivers across the US willing to work for that amount.

The only issue is people like you thinking you know better than the drivers who happily took that offer, many of whom will no longer be able to drive.

It’s slow progress forwards the goal (of taking over everything and instituting authoritarian control). It’s given a positive sounding name to attract foolish young people who don’t realize that cancer “progresses” too.

As Illumina trollishly stated, progressive policy seeks to make "progress". Make change. The opposite position would be conservative, resisting change. And even further would be reactionary, undoing change and "bringing back the good old days".

Socialism is progressive, but progressive isn't necessarily socialism.

Talk to your Lyft drivers. I think once I had one who said she just did it for a couple hours to and from her job. Everyone else is like: I live in Sacramento and start there at 6 am and pick up rides working my way towards San Francisco then end up in San Jose and back to San Francisco for the evening commute...”

The claim that most of them are simply contractors is just a dodge.
