My company just implemented a policy that there is no compensation change until 3 months after a promotion or responsibility change. Once you get a salary change, It is not retroactive. Is this common?
What is the theory behind that? Is it a probation period? If you don't perform at the new level do they bump you back down after 3 months?
New policy but haven’t seen that happen so far
Our compensation changes are retroactive. On the other hand, promotions are only given after you’ve been performing the responsibilities of the role for some time, typically, so maybe your company is just formalizing our tendencies.
In case that was unclear, you get the salary retrospective to the promotion, not to the taking on of responsibilities.
It isn’t common. One typically expects and receives compensation for the work performed as it is performed. Your company is being cheap.
It is common for there to be a delay, but 3 months seems long. In my experience, it has been retroactive.
